Thinking about the Saints upcoming Free Agents

This weekend I had a debate with a couple of Saints and non-Saints fans about our upcoming Free Agency situation and who should be a priority. For the record the Saints top free agents are...Drew Brees, Robert Meachem, Carl Nicks, Marques Colston, Tracy Porter, Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin. As expected, we were all in agreement that Brees is clearly the top priority, but after that we were all in debate. I felt that the our signings should come in the following order of priority...

1. Brees

2. Nicks

3. Colston

4. Franklin

5. Meachem

6. Porter

You'll notice that I didn't list Rogers as I feel that he just ain't worth the money, but wanted to bring it to my CSC brethren and see what you guys think should be the priority of free agents signed.

Franklin

I think Franklin played decent and if he doesn’t try to demand big money (and he won’t cause no one was interested in signing him last season). Another 1 year deal in the $1 – $1.5 Neighborhood!.

I would guess we can retain the top four on that list. If that’s true, then Robinson takes over for Porter, and Patrick for Robinson…but what to do about Meachem? Does this mean Arrington finally gets his big break…or do we draft to replace him? Or try to, for instance, entice Reggie Wayne to sign with us?

Meachem or Colston is outta here!

Meachem will not get 1st round money from us again so I think he’s likely wearing a new uniform. I don’t know that Arrington has the speed to do what Meachem does.

I have seen nothing from Franklin that suggests we should go out of our way to sign him

If he wants to stick around for minimal $$, then that’s ok with me. Otherwise, see you later. Ditto for Rogers.

Brees and Nicks are obvious musts. Colston is a notch below those 2 but a very high priority. Meachem and Porter would be nice to keep, but I we can’t break the bank to keep them.

Dear Benson Family

Please re-sign Brees. Pay Da Man!

I spent 8 years trying to reach him...and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply...Evil.

In the Re-Sign Brees Madness, I think we lose Nicks!

This would be horrible, but I don’t see the Saints having 2 of the highest paid guards in the game. I hope I’m wrong, but I think Nicks will hit the bricks!

My thoughts
  1. Must: Drew and Nicks
  2. At least Tag Colston
  3. Meachem only for the right price.
  4. Porter…Thanks for the SB pick but not impressing me anymore…Trade bait maybe.
  5. Franklin the minimum or see ya
  6. Rodgers who?

Colston is good, but not top 5 in the league good. If Brees or Nicks doesn’t get the franchise tag, it won’t be used.

If Colston gets tagged

He will not come back after another year. Drew really needs to speak with him and Meachem to get them to stay. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to catch the balls from one of the best QB’s In history. I see the tag going to nicks.

Sedrick Ellis has been underperforming so I don’t see them not resigning Franklin and Rodgers. Tracy hasn’t done anything for the team latley I could see them using him as trade bait. Im expecting a heavy D draft yet again.

Hardly an idiot. The man has to look out for his future after football. Nobody knows what the Saints will offer him…but considering the needed signing of Brees and Nicks with what is most likely very little wiggle room money wise after….he’ll be getting less than the open market. You can’t blame someone from signing a potential lucrative contract…especially if the offer on the table from the home team was less than it should have been.

by jeff.l.b on Jan 9, 2012 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

And when he bombs with whatever team he signs with

He’ll then lose MORE money on his next contract. He needs to realize staying in New Orleans is the best thing for him, for now and the future. If he goes anywhere else, he will be counted on moreso than he is here, and I don’t think he will be able to handle that. In our offense, he gets open looks and such because of our depth. If he signs with, say, Cleveland, he will get doubled all day long.

What next contract? Colston will be 29 in the off season and probably sign a 5 year deal. Nobody signs a 34 year old wide out to a big contract. This is his last money deal. He’s been underpaid for what he does for the past 6 seasons. If he goes somewhere else for guaranteed money…nobody in their right mind could blame him.

Colston has never been elected to a pro bowl. He’s never been considered a top 5 wide out. He’s been a border lined top 10, however, for several years. Nobody knows who he would sign with….he could just as easily sign with the Patriots or Pittsburgh or GB than Cleveland at this point, so there’s nothing saying that staying in N.O. would allow him the best opportunity numbers wise. Everybody understood when Fujita left because the money was just ridiculous and you had to understand why he did it for him family. If the same thing happens to Colston the only people that would be bitter are those with no understanding at all.

Lots of teams could make him their go to guy. Chicago…gasp, Rams…pukes a little, Bucs….lots of cap space, Atlanta….has violent seizure. All with good, well maybe not Atlanta so much, QBs who he could really help and hurt us. An idiot, I think not. He lets his game speak for itself, and the Saints will either have to let their check book speak for them or tag him.

3. Colston (tag)
4. Porter
5. Meachem
6. Franklin/Rogers(Minimum)

I think we lose more with Porter than Meachem, although that is based on draft and Colston’s decision. If we can’t keep Colston, Meachem unfortunately becomes a must.

Colston is a great receiver, but I think his value is greater to the Saints than to any other team due to his understanding of this offense and his chemistry with Brees

by daisy117 on Jan 9, 2012 3:52 PM CST reply actions

I think Colston wil be gone

Many other teams will be willing to pay more for him than we will.

Brees will sign a long term deal….although it might not be quick.

Nicks will get franchised.

Meachem is gone. Teams will overpay him for is speed.

Porter is gone. Teams will overpay for his past accomplishments.

Rodgers and Franklin I have an indifference about. We might keep one but only if the price is right. Don’t think we will be keeping both.

No, he may be right

If Dan Snyder throws an insane contract at one of them and some other receiver-needy team—maybe Cleveland or Denver—takes out the other, we could see our receiver corps decimated. Yes, Colston has prospered under Brees…but he’s now established as second fiddle to a tight end, and even someone as self-effacing as he is has his pride. I can see either or both of these guys willing to take a hike in order to establish a “legacy.”

The only person I see on this list being gone is Meach. He is a good player but inconsistent. I would look for the Saints to use him as trade bait and then look for another WR threat in the offseason or late in the draft.

I would like to see Meachem return, but don't forget, in addition to Arrington to fill in for Meachem if he doesn't

return, we have Joe Morgan coming back from IR hopefully. We also have Charles Johnson for DL.

Another thought would be to keep Meachem and release Henderson, Keep Joe Morgan (being optimistic here) and I think chances are high.

with Brees and the offense we have, we could draft or trade for someone to be a #4 receiver. First 3 draft picks need to be defense (LBs)- maybe a safety.

Brees

by hooahsaint2.0 on Jan 9, 2012 11:06 PM CST reply actions

Obviously we’ll keep Brees. But I think that will take the franchise tag, and both Condon and Loomis know it. So they’ll talk to him to see if they can work something out, but they’ll REALLY go after Nicks and his agent hard to try to get him signed. Then once one of them signs (probably Nicks) or when the deadline comes, they’ll franchise Drew.

As for the rest, I really wouldn’t be surprised if we lose all of them but maybe the DTs. I think Franklin and/or Rogers might stick around just because they’re enjoying winning and they’ve made some decent money before.

The only “wild card” in things is the history of knee injuries with Colston might scare some teams off of giving him big money, and especially of big guaranteed money. And without that he may decide to stay if Mikey can shoe-horn in a decent offer into the cap. That, unfortunately, will probably take a significant miracle to pull off.

The only way I could realistically see us keeping Brees, Nicks, and Colston is if at least three of those contracts are heavily bonus-laden, with significant increases in money (or at least somehow cap hit) in 2014 and beyond. Probably they’d have to structure things where lots of salary and/or bonuses have a large subset guaranteed for skill and another large subset for injury so they could avoid “fully guaranteeing” anything (thus avoiding having to put cash into escrow right away) while still giving significant guarantees out. And by guaranteeing part for injury and part for skill they do just that, because one of those guarantees pretty much has to kick in.

Of course, Mickey is far more of an expert on the cap than I, so maybe he can come up with another way. But I still don’t see us keeping all four unless he can find a way to push the major cap hits to 2014 and beyond somehow.

rogers and Franklin suck!

Brees is the must have, without him nothing else matters. Nicks is second. Then i’d say colston. Truth is we should be able to keep 2 of the 3 easily. after that it really does not matter. Our defense sucks…we simply run a scheme and when that scheme breaks down we have no player(s) with enough talent to transcend the scheme and make plays. That’s why we have not been able to cover a TE in 3 years, that’s why our FS leads the team in sacks, that why we have to watch QB’s out run everyone on our defense to the edge and score TD’s. its just a scheme that works nicely when we have a lead or we are able to get pressure. when it gets beat, that’s it we are merely hoping guys hustle to the ball and make plays before a 10 yard pass becomes a 40 yard gain. frankly i could careless who returns on that side of the ball.
