About Robert Meachem
I'm obviously an Eagles fan, DeSean Jackson probably isn't coming back (good riddance) which means the Eagles need a WR. I've been looking at free agent wide-receivers and one guy that I keep coming back to is Robert Meachem. I'm looking at Robert Meachem and my impression is that he doesn't lack any physical talent and that he has produced whenever he's gotten on the field. He's been reliable and dynamic. He probably doesn't have outrageous contract demands. And when you look at his situational stats, his splits and his advanced statistics, they're all stellar.
So, I'm looking at this and I'm wondering what the problem is. Why didn't Meachem see more consistent playing time? Was he a locker-room problem? Does he not prepare the way Sean Payton expects him to? What's the story on this guy. The reason I ask is because I'm weary , he looks fantastic on the surface of things but I figure I must be missing something because I think signing Meachem would be a slam dunk.

You can definitely have him
We drafted him when we didn’t have a clear cut number 1 WR. Colston was just coming off of his first year. There were a lot of high expectations for him especially since he was a 1st rounder. (doesn’t matter to me if it was early or late first round) He has just been outplayed since he arrived by 7th round Colston and UDFA Moore. He has always been a third or fourth string receiver on the depth chart. Has good speed but that is about it. Shows flashes of greatness for a couple of games year and then goes and hides in a cave. He just hasn’t stepped up to the plate and taken playing time away from other players.
I guess I can go anywhere I want. If only I knew where to go-Layne Staley
Why do you think that is? Is there a reason he’s not able to seize and featured spot? Or is he just an inconsistent player?

What kept him on the bench for most of two years (injuries aside) was his apparently lack of route running skills. Drew was not happy with him and his ability to run routes consistently. Personally I think he still struggles with it, although he has shown some obvious improvement. Needless to say, being at the exact right point at the exact right time is pretty essential for Drew as he puts the ball out there to trust his receivers to make the right call.
Meachem will be a serviceable number 2 receiver for pretty much anyone…but don’t ever expect him to be a #1 or to produce like one.
-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.

Meachem is a speed receiver
He sits behind Devery Henderson on the depth chart. Marques Colston is our possession receiver, backed up by Lance Moore. Meachem actually has more playing time than any of them—in part due to injuries to both Colston and Moore this season.
Drew has a reputation for spreading the ball around, but he clearly favors Jimmy Graham, Darren Sproles, and Colston (and Moore, when he’s in). I don’t have the game film—or the expertise to analyze it, frankly—but I strongly suspect the problem with both Henderson and Meachem is a difficulty in shedding coverage.
If you put Meachem in a situation where he’s expected simply to blow past a cornerback, he can probably handle that as well as anyone (if the cornerback cooperates). Otherwise, he doesn’t seem to be very adaptable.

Yep, Meachem is a straight line speed guy
and caught some out routes OK this season. He can walk. Joe Morgan is smaller, but I think he’s got more juke to him. What was Morgans’ injury BTW?

Aside from his all time highlight in 2009
"Move over Marino, there's a new Brees coming through town!"-Jim Henderson
i like meachem- i think jeff analyzed the situation well
i think meachem has value to us and will improve, especially as the system becomes old hat to him- but he is replaceable- maybe Joe Morgan. But, we have a larger number of weapons than most teams and it seems Graham and Colston are almost always somewhat open- and ditto to some degree with Moore and then there’s Sproles etc.
I am probably in the minority, but I actually think having a second viable TE as a receiver AND blocker is a higher priority than Meachem. I am hopeful that Dave Thomas/Michael Higgins is that guy. Maybe Shockey reprises on the cheap?

Meachem’s best year was in 2009. He has regressed in catches and yardage each year since then. He has had 4 years to improve…not sure how much more time he needs or deserves.
I agree with you that a second tight end should be a priority. I like the idea of going after one later in the draft if a good opportunity presents itself. I love the production New England has gotten out of both their tight ends and would love to replicate it.

I think a lot of the reason for the (perceived) regression
is the arrival of Graham and Sproles. Graham is much taller and Sproles is much faster than Meachem. And, honestly, looking at his career numbers, they’re pretty consistent, his reception and yards trendlines are nearly flat.
There’s really no telling what he’d do in another system where he’s a #2 on the depth chart, which would be a big reason for him to switch teams, since he’s 5th on the WR/TE depth chart right now. But getting passes from Brees versus some lesser QB would factor into the equation.
I think Colston will leave and Devery is a trade/cut candidate. I vote to keep Meachem around if the price is reasonable ($2-2.5MM)
What I think will happen: Colston walks and thrives while earning $10MM/yr. Meachem walks and truly regresses partially due to a reduction in QB quality. Their replacements will be overwhelmed by working under a new system and inexperience and Saints fans wish they had their old friends back.
Which people claim that their team can defeat our professional football squad?
He doesn't like contact
He ran out of bounds on a reverse in the playoffs when he could have turned upfield and got about 5 yards by being willing to take some contact.

He clears out the middle
He is the man sprinting up the sides on the go routes clearing out the middle of the field so guys like Colston and Graham get open and get the catches.
he's the guy that steals the ball back right out of the defender's hands
I know, that was only once but it shows great heart.
Let's not forget he was hurt for a large part of his career.

That was the only year he missed significant time. He hasn’t missed a game In 3 years.

He's a one trick pony.
But he’s our one trick pony, and our offense needs that straight line speed, deep ball guy. If he leaves, we’ll need a replacement. I’ve always liked Meachem more than most though, so take that with a grain of salt. And even I have to admit that he hasn’t developed even one little bit since we drafted him.
I was thinking about that too
I think Jackson would fit in well and be very productive with us but his demeanor and attitude scares the hell outta me.

Why?
When has Payloo ever shown that they have a problem with telling a guy to shut the f*** up or get out of town?
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
Who are you referring to?
We usually dont bring in players like that.

by AcquiredPanic on Feb 4, 2012 8:44 AM CST up reply actions
Exactly. If we don’t normally bring guys in like that, I don’t see why everyone always says they’ll be a distraction. I think Payton is a good enough coach, and our locker room is strong enough, that it could survive D-Jax. Look at Ochocinco and Haynesworth in New England this year. Chad worked, and still, works his butt off to stay on that team. Haynesworth didn’t, and got kicked out of town. I believe we would be similarly strict.
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
Which would mean, after Jackson got kicked out of town, that we lost Meachem and replaced him with nothing. And by that time, all the good receivers in free agency would have long ago signed with other teams.
DeSean Jackson is a whiny, undependable little bitch. He’s not worth a moment’s consideration.
What! shall we curse the planets of mishap

I don't really think he'd be a problem here.
His issue in Philly is money, because he thinks he’s worth more than he is. If he were to come here, it would be because he realizes 1 of 2 things. Either he’s not worth as much as he thinks he is, or, more likely, he takes less money to come to a probable Super Bowl team. In either case, he gets here, Drew straightens his a** up, and he’s quiet all season, while still giving us what Meach and Devery were supposed to give us.
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
north.. we don't have the money nor the time..
to experiment with a project “problem” player.. we are not looking to “form the receiving group..”
we can’t afford to pay a big FA contract to a guy with flags on him, & then cut ties after we realize it won’t work out..
failure.. not an option.. we are in a SB run, here.. in case you forgot..
the WR corps is already formed.. if we lose one guy the next guy brought in must continue what we had..
your guy doesn’t fit the mold..

Desean Jackson does what Meach and Devery do, but much better. If we could get him cheap(I’m talking roughly what it would have cost to keep Meach, give or take $1M), cut Devery, and have him not be an a**, our receiving corps gets better.
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
"Cheap" would be the problem
Seeing that money is his main issue with the Eagles.

The Spags comment was a joke about the Eagles, and how he came to NO instead of Philly. As for Jackson, I really think his prima donna image is blown up. He wants money, because he outperformed his contract. He wouldn’t really have a chance to do that here, because he wouldn’t get as many touches as he did in Philly. Talent-wise, he’s definitely an upgrade over Meach and Henderson, and if we could somehow get him and keep Colston, I’d be all for it.
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
I totally agree about the talent part.
I know you shouldn’t judge someone by looks but Jackson just looks like a trouble causer to me (his face says bad attitude to me), plus how he acted last season will no doubt make a lot of the best teams cautious about picking him up, imo.
"Leon Spinks is so ugly that when a tear rolls down his face, it only gets halfway, then it rolls back up" - Muhammad Ali.
Maybe you guys don't understand what I'm saying.
I don’t want him if he going to be expensive, or an a**. If he comes in for cheap (and I really don’t see him getting much on the market), and he shuts his mouth, I think he’d be a great addition
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
Agreed, that kind of talent is always welcome. However,
if he going to be expensive, or an a**
he definitely wants the cash, and has a well-established history of resembling the south end of a northbound horse. He also seems like the kind of player who would bitch about the number of touches he got per game. Not a good trait in our offense. Let the Raiders have him.
This isn't about rules, it's about manners. Now there's no rule that says that I cant come over here and fart on your entree. But I don't do it. Why? Because it's not good manners.
Like I said
If he wants to get paid, he can go somewhere else. If he wants to complain about touches, he can go somewhere else. If not, he is definitely an upgrade to our receiving corps. One thing we always gripe about for Devery and Meach is their inability to gain separation from DBs. Well, D-Jax can do just that. If he was smart, he’d sign a short term deal here, shut his mouth, make his plays, win a SB, then get paid after that.
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
His issue is NOT money, but immaturity
His issue is that if he doesn’t get his own way, if everything isn’t good for Desean Jackson, he doesn’t give any real effort on the field. He’s a bad teammate because he can’t be counted on. He has his highlight reel, of course; but you can never know if he’s going to be there when he’s needed…and that’s because his real problem is that, emotionally, he’s about 7 years old.
That kind of person isn’t worth taking a chance on, and you’re sounding like a battered spouse who insists “my love will change him.” No it won’t. Pay him every penny he wants, and he’ll still find some other reason to withhold his effort on the field.
What! shall we curse the planets of mishap

agree.. doesn't have the "makeup" to be a saint..
meacum with his shortcomings (if you wanna find them) stays with the program..
that’s the thing i’m dreading the most about this free-agency chaos..
the fact that it kills continuity (which i think has been an asset in our receiver group for the last 4-5 years)
we always looking at the greener grass.. the andres/the megatrons /the randy mosses as if our guys didn’t really do much of nothing.. those 5,400 yards got caught by these guys along with jimmy/sproles/pierre/etc.
we got something going, here..
it would be wise to keep it rolling.. but if we must re-tool.. let it be players that can actually be assimilated into the group.. not “me-players” not: “lyon can’t do everything..”

He's a one trick pony
I’ll be the first to admit he hasn’t lived up to his potential considering he was a first round draft pick. But, if you want to look at him as a player I think he’s been pretty good considering how diverse our offense is. He’s averaged 41 catches/650 yards/6.5 TDs over the past 3 years and has good hands. He has made multiple catches where he has adjusted to the ball and made a high level of difficulty catch. I would love to have him at a reasonable price but there are teams that could use him to be a #2 or #1 WR (browns?)
