Calling all "newbies"

As Hans stated earlier, there is a lot of new names around here, specially since Dave opened those try outs for new contributors. I know Mr. Petersen is probably already making a compilation of who's who but how about we take this load off his already very busy posting schedule and do it by ourselves?

Not sure why so many CSC members changed there nicks. I guess there has to be a reason since it implies starting from scratch for those people. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

But, again, who's who?

This FanPost was written by a reader and member of Canal Street Chronicles. It does not necessarily reflect the views of CSC and its staff or editors.

Please allow me to introduce myself.....

I’m a man of wealth and taste.

I’ve been around for a long, long year, stole many a man’s soul and faith.

I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain.
Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed his fate.

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name.
But what’s puzzling you, is the nature of my game.

I stuck around St. Petersburg, when I saw it was a time for a change.
Killed the Czar and his ministers…..Anastasia screamed in vain.

I rode a tank and held a general’s rank,
when the Blitzkrieg raged and the bodies stank.

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name.
Ah, what’s puzzling you, is the nature of my game.

I watched with glee, while your kings and queens,
fought for ten decades for the gods they made.

I shouted out, “Who killed the Kennedy’s?”, when after all it was you and me.

Let me please introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and taste.
I laid traps for troubadours who get killed before they reached Bombay.

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guessed my name.
But what’s confusing you, is just the nature of my game.

Just as every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners are saints.
As heads is tails, just call me Lucifer, cause I’m in need of some restraint.

So if you meet me…have some courtesy, have some sympathy, have some taste.
Use all your well-learned politesse or I’ll lay your soul to waste.

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guessed my name.
But what’s puzzling you, is the nature of my game.

What’s my name? Can you guess my name?
I’ll tell you one time…….you’re to blame.

No

Well, yes Coldplay sucks.
Beatles couldn’t be overrated, nor could the Stones.
Grateful Dead appear to be an acquired taste, I don’t get it.
I understand that in retrospect the younger generations can’t fully appreciate the Beatles and the Stones. It helps if you experienced it. But the fact is that every one who has come on the scene since is just recycling the recycled that was already recycled, and it sounds like it. Nothing new under the sun, unfortunately. For example, Adele is strongly channeling Dusty Springfield. If only her material was stronger. I prefer Duffy. Still, it’s a copy of a copy of a copy, nothing like the original.

The thing about Nirvana

They helped introduce grunge metal to the masses. And they were awesome for it. No one in the rest of the country had ever heard grunge and Nirvana made it popular. Sub Pop Records became a known entity. Bands like SoundGarden and unfortunately pearl jam made it big. But Nirvana didn’t create the grunge sound, they opened for bands like the Melvins and took gunge to a whole new level.

For pure genius, I’d certainly pick Godlfrapp the highest
(or Bach) and Joni Micthell not far behind. Sade.

Blind Faith
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Moody Blues
Steely Dan
Cream
And, I’d have to list Three Dog Night & CCR for massive creativeness and variety

none of yours were highly rated… (at least not as astronimically high as the ones on my list)

so, they might not be that great.. they might not be as good as most people think they are, but not the most overrated of all time.

It’s not just bands that suck.

you need to take into account how much people fawn over and worship them vs their actual level of talent/quality/listenablity.

thus, a band like Metallica who is extremely highly rated (many people follow them religiously) and they deliver a very high level of quality/listenablilty…. they might be “over rated” to some, but the difference in their rating and their listenability is not as far apart as the bands i’ve listed.

by Dan Kelly on Feb 26, 2012 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

who is “blind faith”?

If I don’t know who they are, they can’t be “over-rated” because I know a s***ton about rock and roll bands, and I’ve never heard of them.

See…

if their “rating” is low…. and they suck… they might be given more credit than they are due, but the fact that they are not highly rated disqualifies them from the list.

if you prefer to think in numbers....

Beatles rating = 1,000,000,000,000
Beatles listenability = 50

Blind Faith raiting = 1000*
Blind Faith listenability = 2*

(*That’s just a guess, for and example.)

You see the difference in ratio?

BF is over-rated, no doubt.

But, the Beatles are waaaaaaaaaaay more over-rated.

by Dan Kelly on Feb 26, 2012 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, it's weird how bands get well known and successful

I think that is about to change, to some extent, with the web.

Hmmmm, “listenability” is an interesting term. Beatles might shoot back to the top in that category.

Now, as I am not sooo into Chill, I just got blown away by a tune yesterday. And, this is also weird: what is listenable to me may not be listenable to you! And, when you hear a song, what mood you are in affects how you like it! Almost like brain-washing or something.

To me, mainly, when I say top bands, and it took listening to a Santana song to make it hit (and, embarrassingly, he should have been at the top of my list), a top band is band that does some (more than one, and preferably, a handful) over-the-top tunes. Tunes that make your blood boil when you hear it, makes you spin like a top, make you gibber with awe….and write gibberish like this. And, it’s almost always the ones that grab me the first time I hear it and don’t ever let go.

By that defintion (and I’ll give a few examples):
Santana: “Smooth”, “Persuasion”, “Jingo”, “Hope you’re feeling better” and LOTS more

Savoy Brown: “A hard way to go”, “It’ll make you happy”, “Time does tell” (it’s a bit long), “Stay while the night is young”

Stevie Ray Vaughan: “Crossfire”,

John Mellencamp “Cherry Bomb”, “Paper and fire”, “Pink Houses”

Los Lobos: “Hurry tomorrow”, “La Venganza de los Pelados”

The Hollies: “Bus Stop”, “Stop stop stop”, “Carousel”

Los Lonely boys: “Senorita”, “Heaven”, “Tell me why”

Blind Faith: “Sea of joy”, I should really take these guys off of the list as the song I was actually thinking of was “Badge”, but that was Cream!

Rolling Stones: “Can’t you hear me knocking”, “Monkey man”

Then, there’s the classification that seems to have started this whole discussion. In my mind, this is a totally different type of band. This is a band that, extremely consistently, put out hits. Maybe this was a sign of the times. If you were going to buy 12 songs at a time, most people preferred having a majority of those songs to be good. Honestly? I can’t of one song of the Beatles that I would classify as over the top. BUT, they were almost all good and appealed to the mass of a generation. The only two bands that ever did that, in my opinion, were Elvis and the Beatles. I don’t know if the Beatles followed their generation or the generation followed the Beatles but, wow!, it really was something awesome to live through. They were just hitting the Ed Sullivan show as I was about 10 and I rode that wave for what? 10 years? 15?

Anyways, I can’t even think of a lot of bands that the majority of people would even know who they are but the ones that, for me, put out consistently good songs: Goldfrapp, Sade, Beatles, Maroon 5, Katie Melua, CCR, The Beach Boys.

Goldfrapp, CCR, Maroon 5, and The Beach Boys blow me away because they do both the do songs. I didn’t list any of the three above because I expect everyone knows The Beach Boys, Maroon 5 and CCR and there are few people who would really enjoy Goldfrapp, to my utter astonishment. And, that brings me to the weird thing about tunes, which is how a song can really suck but you heard it in some special setting or something and you love it for life. I know some of the songs I like, from a rational perspective, seriously suck. And, of course, then there’s just preferences. I’ve gone waaaay Chill and mellow. Which is where Goldfrapp comes in.

The other thing that dawned on me during my pondering here is the fact that rock singing, basically, sucks. Most of the singers in rock are horrible. And, sorry crescendo, but I think this is true of Chicago, also. This is another place that the Beatles (and the Beach Boys, actually) could sing for real. And, in both cases, their harmonies are awesome.

So! We finally found something to replace TOP for a little while. And, I must say, I am enjoying this a lot more than TOP. I swear, the whole time we were discussing TOP, I felt like someone was pulling my chain. And, yes, HooahSaint, maybe I’m being paranoid, again, but, I ran that into the ground and came up with….nothing. Trying to grab some air in your hands is easier than pinning down anyone as to any real arguable advantage, in points, to TOP.

This does not meet Plague’s request, so I’ll try that separately and, hopefully, not as long.

by singleblow on Feb 28, 2012 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t take offense by it, but just out of curiosity. What do you consider good singing? Chicago has some of the best, and most versatile vocals in my opinion. That’s part of the reason why they intrigue me so much. Wait…you’ve heard Chicago, right? Just checking.

GoldFrapp, Michael Buble, Sade

Alision Goldfrapp has the most amazing voive with a range that covers most of the piano.

If you need an example, “Black Cherry”. The “ignite me, exite me” whole stanza just sends me.

i know a s*** ton of bands from 70’s on, more than many from the 60’s, but I wouldn’t claim to be a fan or have special knowledge in that area.

But, if they were from the 70’s on and I’ve never heard of them, they couldn’t have been nearly as popular as you think they were.

And, yes I know Eric Clapton (whoever said to look him up – duh!), I know about Cream (much more popular than Blind Faith, obviously)… but those bands (the ones singleblow listed) don’t have enough popluarity to be listed as most overrated… unless they truly, horribly suck.)

-

Also, I just thought of the best contender for #5 on the most-overrated list, The Doors.

thus, over-rated…

(but, if they aren’t that popular, then they can’t be THAT overrated… their “rating” isn’t high enough.)

Top five is tough.

There are so many variables. Talent (Intricacies), creativity, total body of work, etc.
Bands/groups:
Chicago
Rush
Tool
Yes
Led Zeppelin
Not necessarily in that order. The Beatles, Kansas, Styx (Mostly because of their live performance. Best live band, hands down.), King Crimson, Dream Theater, Live, Queen, The Doors, 3. and many other bands all have plenty of music that really moves me. Not 100% sure about that top five bands, but none of them deserve any less than ties within top ten.
Musicians:
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Neil Peart
Thomas Lang
Danny Carey
Once again, it’s difficult to single out five but these five have had a particularly strong impact on the way that I view music.

A) Won't and B) Correct

here’s a story, in the early 80’s I traded my original LP of Dark Side of the Moon to my neighbor/friend, for his original LP of Black Sabbath (1st album). He was an amazing guitarist (self taught) and could play all the Floyd cuts on acoustic, and I was more into Sabbath at that time. And he really could use it as a learning tool, win/win at the time.

I’ll buy for Chicago any day of the week. There are few groups that can orchestrate music as well as them. They are all super pros at what they do, and have a plethora of quality music. Vai and Satriani are more than shredders, they’re virtuosos. Okay, maybe Vai is. Satriani’s like “Staples” in regard to shredding.

Yes over Genesis?

I won’t accept that. Gabriel-era I mean…After “Trick of the tail”, you can trash ’em all you want.

Use to argue with high school friends about how Rush was overrated. Still can see their dismay after local papers litterally trashed a Rush performance and ridiculized them individually as musicians after a show they did here in the early ’80s.

Let’s say they were the Jethro Tull of their time. Vaguely irritating at best. And I hate “Tom Sawyer”…

the problem with these lists.. is..

that you must take into consideration contemporary bands..
cannot compare an older band with a new.. & such..
when i was reaaaaaaaaally young (bout 5,500 BC..) music was a little primitive, i must say.. but i have seen endless reinventions.. the one thing about rock is.. just when you think it’s dead.. a great new sound appears.. one band that catches the lightning.. typically as a byproduct of a series of bands, part of a sort of “music scene..”
that’s what i meant you have to put the bands in their common time frames of reference..
the great 5-6 british prog bands of the late sixties ..early seventies, happened cause they were all closely confined in a short time period..

by the 9th plague on Feb 28, 2012 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

You're band generation are byproducts. Not mine.

Genesis, Police, King Crimson, Tom Waits..They didn’t confine. They just did it.

Wish you’ve been there…

Repeat? Run it!

by FrenchFreak on Feb 28, 2012 9:14 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

you are agreeing with me.. in your own canadian way..

genesis didn’t just sprout out of thin air..
the late beatles sound actually influenced all those prog bands that came around about the same time.. some of them even shared musicians.. crimson, yes, floyd, etc..
the police would not exist if there hadn’t been a bob marley to transcend a sound, that in turn was a main stream sound in their jamaica.. (.“.ahh.. the jamaica room.. yesss..?”) & besides their rhythm.. there is an obvious culmination of the punk sound.. sort of like the top of the mountain for punkdom.. so, imo.. they were part of a scene..
i’m not too familiar with waits.. have gone back & rediscovered his stuff thru the years.. a virtual unknown in egypt..

In reference to the crappy niners fans, not all of them are crappy. Some of the guys I work with are niners fans and one has season tickets. He went to the Saints game last year, well he did go the playoff game, but this didn’t happen at that game, so anyway, someone threw their beer on a guy who was wearing a Saints jersey. My friend bought that guy a beer, the Saints fan that is, so he isn’t really a crappy niners fan. But they really let me have it after the playoff game. I told them that they shouldn’t worry. I must have accidentially hit the spacebar when trying to type out computer as part of my nick, so Comp it is. And I am officially throwing down the gauntlet for title of official dork of CSC. I’m so dorky I put computer as part of my nickname, but due to an epic fail on my part (even more reason for Official dork of CSC (ODOCSC)) I am officially comp.

Now there is a band I had almost completely forgotten: The Kinks

Their song, “When I turn out the living room lights” is a riot. Let’s see:

Too funny. If this doesn’t make you laugh out loud, then you have lost your funny bone or you are ugly as sin (yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m sure there is some half-witty quip in there).

Who cares if you’re Jewish,
And your breath smells of garlic,
And your nose is a shiny red light.
To me you are gorgeous,
And everything’s right,
When I turn off the living room light.

Your clothes are old-fashioned,
Your knuckles are bony,
Your hair looks a terrible sight.
But I don’t have to see you,
The way that you are,
When I turn off the living room light.
When I turn off the living room light.
I don’t have to see you,
The way that you are,
When I turn off the living room light.

Well it’s not that you are ugly,
And I’m not being cruel,
It helps me to relax, dear,
It helps to keep me cool.
Now I am not intending,
To make you feel ashamed,
What’s wrong in me pretending?
‘Cause you can’t help being plain.

Your nose may be bulbous,
Your face may be spotty,
Your skin may be wrinkled and tight.
But I don’t want to see you,
The way that you are,
So I turn off the living room light.

We don’t feel so ugly,
We don’t feel so draggy,
We don’t feel so twisted up tight.
And we don’t feel as ugly as we really are,
When we turn off the living room light.
When we turn off the living room light.
We don’t feel as ugly as we really are,
When we turn off the living room light.

For any newbies out there: Hi, I'm Just 'Nother Day

Joined CSC 12 Oct 2009.
Liked it so I stayed.
Born and raised in NOLA Irish Channel.
Been in Okinawa, Japan over 30 years.
(Liked it so I stayed.)
Had an erection the entire Super Bowl season.
Lost it when we played Seattle.
My girlfriend hates Seattle.
Even their so-called coffee.
I hate stats and pray for those who do not.
I don’t argue with members.
I just state my piece then leave them alone so they can go to confession.
I have an invisible dog named Just ‘Nother Dog.
He don’t cost much.
Wine is my drug of choice.
I still think bacon contains fiber.
I helped a poor old Japanese lady who fell in the street.
I assume she was poor.
She only had 127 Yen in her purse.
People still think my avatar is Jack Elam and not me.
They are correct . . and smart.
I haven’t visited CSC in a while.
Off-season gets me depressed.
Wine is my drug of choice.
I’ve never been in the Super Dome.
That’s why it’s now the “Mercedes Benz Super Dome,”
and not the “Just ’Nother Super Dome.”
Next time I’m in NOLA, I’m going to buy a T-shirt from Dave.
For every T-shirt I can say five restricted words and not get banned.
Can’t wait.
My girlfriend doesn’t know why I’m shufflin’ every day.
Maybe it’s because wine is my drug of choice.
Or did I mention that?

Every day I'm shufflin'!

Crescendo2020

I’ve been a member round these parts since the end of the year before the last year of the world, according to the Mayans. The “crescendo” in my name was borrowed from a band that I was in. The band name was borrowed from the term, “crescendo”. Crescendo was easy for me to remember, and will be all of, or part of every one of my screen names/user names for the rest of my life, and since a few years ago. The “2020” was taken from a recycling company that I worked for. At some point, I was forced to use numerical characteristics in a screen name, so I stuck with that combination because my brain is lazy and forgetful, forcing me to fear change and require routine. The same is true for my passwords, so if you figure out my password you’ll have it forever because I’m not changing it for the likes of no identity thief, y’hear? I would have been a member much earlier if the internet had told me about it earlier. I would have been around more as well, however, I lacked a reliable internet source for the past month.

Hi, my name is Doc

and its been 6 weeks since my last Saints game. I’m still a little shaky, and every day is a struggle. I try to follow the steps, give it over to my higher power, but every few days I find myself cruising by NFL network, palms sweating, throat dry, looking for NFL replay. Sometimes I swear I hear Jim Henderson calling my name. I actually tried mainlining an archived TOP argument the other day between Pizza and Dan Kelly, and that’s when I realized I needed serious help.

--But the animal is inside out.

Hi, Doc.

Help yourself to the warmed over coffee and stale cookies in the corner.

I changed my name after the season ended, but I’m still haunted by calls of “HansDat!” I also find myself waking up screaming “Why are we blitzing on third and long????” at least three times a night and visions of Vernon Davis racing downfield are permanently burned onto my retinas.
