Behind Enemy Lines: Rewind DAT.... I'm not done yet!
I know that we are supposed to be moving on from the Saints heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but damn it I'm not done yet! You see I'm like all of you other Saints fans out there; ridiculously conspicuous with my gear, yelling "WHO DAT!" arbitrarily in random establishments, and let's not even talk about my 2007 "Saints Black" Tahoe with license plates that read: NAWL1NS on the rear of the truck, and SAINTS on the front.
But there is one difference between you and me, my fellow Saints-FANATIC: I am behind enemy lines. Surrounded by our arch nemesis, yeah you know who I'm talking about...I know your blood boils just as much as mine when their team cycles through on one of those NFL Play 60 commercials. The music starts: "Watch who's comin' at you why? Who's got the power? Watch who's comin' at you if you might allow her..". It's all good for a second, then you see that face you recognize, Matty-Ice (As he is anointed by his delusional cult following). When I see it, it takes every bit of inner "woosah" channeling to not run to the garage, grab a gold can of spray paint, and better my neighbors' homes with giant fleur-de-lis' on their front doors. Half a block should make me feel better, right? I mean that is at least 10-12 newly Saints style decorated homes in a matter of minutes.
But let's cut to the chase. I'm not done yet! I'M NOT OVER THE LOSS to the 49ers. But I do feel a smidge better. You know why? Because they loss to NY the same way they beat us, turnovers. And to make it even sweeter they were kicking game turnovers. Mr. Karma's a B here saying, I love you Kyle Williams - you are my hero. I mean c'mon man, no Roby fumble and no Sproles fumble equals we are all trying to figure out what outfit we are wearing to Lucas Oil Field. I was all ready to step out in my gold sneaks, khaki shorts, and top it off with a custom Lil' Doogie black n' gold t-shirt that would read "Say Bruh, We Real Huh?!"
Seriously though, did I miss something in the local media? Nobody else is talking about this? I mean are we all just sitting lotus style healing, while our last and most important game is to be played in a little over a week without us? Well I don't know about you, but Giants vs. Patriots? Been there, done that. I'm not hating on them. Actually I'm glad Eli and Brandon, the natives, may get fitted with the coveted hardware. But this was our year! We broke every record, peaked at the right time, and had our eye on the prize. Now I have to spend the next seven months listening to the national media talk about how Tom "Terrific" (gag) or Eli (ehh) have more Super Bowl rings then Brees...
"Watch who's comin' at you why? Who's got the power? Watch who's comin' at you if you might allow her...".
...I'm out, I got house calls to make. Fluer-de-lis' are in high demand here apparently!
I'M NOT OVER IT..... You'll be hearing more from me behind the lines....

Do you like this story?
Comments
i liked this.. it's from "the gut"
why are we still dwelling..? there’s not a day that passes that a thought or two invade my mind.. “dang we should have done better..”
is there really a karma..? are things linked like we hope..?
i have taken my deep breath and faced it by now.. the capricious bounces of the football didn’t really do us in.. we did.. by not closing the deal..
we thought (and the players have been quoted saying so..) that this was our year, again.. a lot of people could “feel it”
so, where did that go..? how can destiny be broken?
maybe there is no such.. nothing is really pre-written.. the events are molded along the way.. the story is written as we live it..
our team couldn’t win that one game.. that’s all that remains.. the reasons may be techno/tactical.. or karmatc.. or both..
but we just couldn’t find the way..
we were close to awesome for the most part.. maybe that’s what makes it harder to let it go..
keep it up, writer.. and stay on your horse.. we got more road to ride..
Couldn't have said it better myself...
I, too, am behind enemy lines. I am not over it yet, either. I still tune into ESPN 1420 (Lafayette) online to listen to local reaction. The WHO DAT NATION that calls in, by in large, share our feelings about the way the season ended. However….we are STILL the WHO DAT NATION and that will NEVER change!!!!!

I'm trying to decide what offends me more...this guy saying he speaks for Saints fans with the pedantic anti-falcon diatribe...or that people are voting "yes".

A rah rah rah, we’re awesome, falcons suck, 9ers got what they deserve article…is hardly what I’d call good reading material or something that should be considered front page material. I’m sorry…but this was by far the worst post out of all that have been submitted. Apparently though, the writer knew his majority audience and that he could get himself over with a simple chest beating maneuver despite the lack of any actual merit within the piece itself.
You, and Hans especially do really good work with some of the in-depth ideas you try to push out. Satch and Juge also do some fairly creative work on occasion that is very much worth reading…however, the content of most of these, especially this one in particular, have been very much lacking in content worthy of being regular material.
If he wanted to do a behind the enemy lines article…that’s cool and could have been fun. But where’s the actual info besides “i hate the Falcons”. He’s behind enemy lines…so give us some feeling there about what the enemy is thinking. How do they feel about their new coordinators?….How do they think this will stack up against the Saints?…Do the fans there think they have a plan to deal with free agent losses including possibly stealing a member of our organization? All of those would have been great to read about….instead we got how this person wishes he/she could be a felon and vandalize the homes of good, hardworking people.

Or...
it was intended to be a cathartic article in which the author describes their living situation “behind the enemy lines” in a sports town home to the Saints’ most bitter current rivalry. It’s not like there were cheap shots and the whole part from which you took “felon and vandalize the homes of good, hardworking people” was very obviously intended as sarcasm, so using it as evidence of poor writing/content is willfully misreading the article.
I'm not telling you that you don't have a right to your opinion.
I’m just asking…don’t you get tired of viewing the world with such a negative perception all the time?

I don't view the world in a negative perception all the time.
Not even close. There are things that I take very seriously….football is one of them. I come here to talk with other Saints fans and have serious conversations about the state of team and the direction of the organization and the sport as a whole. What I don’t come here for is chest-beating and rah rah rah, especially when that tends to creep into the land of hypocrisy and unnecessary fervor.
In my opinion posts like this deserve to belong in the realm of fanposts. Fanposts can be written off….they are after all exactly what the name states…posts by fans. You expect to see hellbent views and ridiculous statements that are said in emotion rather than logic. I am a very logical person who very much prefers to think things through then act on straight emotion. That’s not negative. I think front page posts should be reserved for indepth and knowledgeable articles pertaining to the team. They are articles that I think should either offer up well thought of debate or come of the thoughts and perceptions that the leadership (aka you, Hans, etc) feel properly encompass CSC as a whole and represents itself as such.
How many articles have been written on this site about Saints fans going to away games and being harassed and threatened? A lot to say the least. The animosity toward Saints fans in San Francisco was so great that it made national news and they increased the security a great deal including dressing up police officers in opposing player gear to root out the people responsible to ensure that those who want to visit and cheer for their team can do so safely amidst good, honest, fun loving fans. Yet we post things like this entry talking about spray painting peoples houses, blood boiling in anger about seeing a Falcons commercial, and laughing and calling a player their hero for having the most tragic game of his young career. Yes I know there’s a great deal of difference between thinking these things and acting on it. But think about….when you have these emotions running through your veins, how close are you to actually just being one spilled drink away, or being bumped waiting in line by accident from someone wearing a different jersey, from turning into one of those punks from SF?
Do I get angry at seeing the Falcons commercial? No…why would I? I love them…the Panthers one too. It’s cool to see some of these multi-millionaires out there having fun, giving back, and playing some ball with some kids. I wish the Saints had one of those commercials. The only emotion I feel is a hint of jealousy that we don’t have one. I’m happy when the Saints win…I’m pissed when they lose…but I don’t go around holding anger toward opposing teams etc.
I’m a good guy…I like to have fun…I like to goof off…I like to laugh. It’s just painfully obvious what I find to be funny….and what I find to be serious…are at odds with what a lot of other people around here find to be funny or serious. Football, especially the Saints, is something I simply choose not to make light of on a regular basis. I choose to attack it from an intellectual and thought provoking manner rather than a more lighthearted one. I don’t enjoy seeing people make fun of Jamarcus Russell and saying how he can try out as an offensive lineman. I’m a fat guy…I know bullying. Did he throw his life away?….maybe. Does he deserve the ire of a Raiders fan for not taking the game seriously enough?…probably. Does he deserve to be an ongoing punchline?…no.
You want to crack jokes…crack jokes about something that can universally laughed at including by the people involved as the punchlines. Like Brady’s glorious and wonderful hair, or the absolute hilarity and flat out joyousness that is Brad Keisl’s beard. But hey…maybe being bald with a slightly patchy beard…I care about those things more than the casual fan. Like I said before and during all this rambling…I’m a good, fun-loving guy. I just don’t find any fun or love in harassing other teams and putting down athletes who are simply doing the best they can. Does Shanle suck as a starting linebacker? Maybe. But he’s also been there almost every game of the best five to six years of my football watching life. I’d like to buy him a beer.

For the most part
you captured how I feel about this article.
Its like that guy that we all work with, that says whatever people want to hear, just to please them, but he doesnt necessarily feel the same way.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
not trying to antagonize, here.. but..
why do feel so guilty about belonging to a whole..? something larger yet intangible as a fan base (the old fandom, i guess)
it seems that it pains you to be PARTAL to something..
the writer just touched on a certain topic that interested more than bored/offended.. hey.. that’s a good thing..
you stated your discontent.. and it as valid as anybody’s.. just as.. but not more valid..
a simple recount of facing an off season in a place where the mayority don’t even care about what you love, may be a compelling subject..
maybe the writer didn’t capture the idea masterfully.. it doesn’t matter.. he did touch some people.. cause it evoked recent feelings.. and that appeared enough to get him voted positively..
there is a bit of mischief implied, sure not to be taken literaly..
you do belong to us, jeff.. quit fighting it.. and lighten up.. (lol, i think..)
nothing wrong with belonging to a cause, even it is as rudimentary as fandom of a sports team.. a bigger spirit, of sorts.. certainly nothing to be ashamed of..

There's nothing wrong or shameful about belonging to a fanbase to celebrate a sports team.
There is however, plenty of shame in celebrating feelings and ideas that I personally think are just fundamentally wrong. I find very little difference in the feeling of the article above…to the idiot/moron who had the Katrina sign at the Bears game back in 2006. They both came from the same malice and misguided attempts at fandom as far as I’m concerned. One attempted to make light of a national tragedy in the name of cheering on a favorite team…the other made light of a young man’s failure in what was probably the most heartbreaking game of the man’s life. A mistake that could potentially cause the end of his career and dream in football if the coaches decide to cut him next season due to his miscues as well as the healthy return of Ginn. I have no doubt that someone will berate and yell at me for comparing the two…but honestly…they both are much, much, much more closely related than people care to think.
-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.
He mentioned Kyle Williams once, saying sarcastically that Williams was his hero. He liked the game because it felt like vengeance and/or justice because SF was beaten in the same way they beat us. There was no vitriol in his article, only jest. The points you make are valid, except in that you are making this piece of writing into something it is not.
Sorry…I very much disagree. I find no real sarcasm in his tone at all and plenty of vitriol toward the Falcons and an unhealthy level of enjoyment at another teams demise. Maybe it’s a generational gap…maybe it’s a difference in where I grew up…who knows. Some things are far as I’m concerned…you don’t jest about in those ways.
-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.
I thought about
Auditioning for Dave to see if I could be a blogger or not. And my title for the blogs would’ve been called “Behind Enemy Lines” since I work and live in Georgia. 2 hours outside that god forsaken city. I hate going there with a passion.

I liked it because I can feel it.
That game upset me more than any other loss I can remember in Saints history. It upset me more than LSU ruining what could have been the best season of all time for a college team.
My anger and resulting sickness has been such that I have not even listened to my Sirius NFL radio since. For perspective, I’ve had Sirius for 7 years now. In that time, every day I am in my truck traversing to and from work, I listen to the NFL channel exculsively. This game has upset me so much that I’ve listened to the comedy channels these last three weeks. In addition, I stopped writing / talking football and have lost all intrest in the Super Bowl. I didn’t even watch the Pro-Bowl.
That one might not count because I normally don’t care or make it a point to watch anyways. But I have stopped wearing Saints clothing every day. When I go anywhere with the family or to the store, I don’t care about the ju-ju I can give and wear dress shirts and brush my hair instead of opting for a hat and Saints attire.
I’m not angry at the turnovers. San Fran was bound to get a few. Hell, we gave them 5 and still took the lead twice in the last 5 minutes of the game. I understand running backs aren’t protected in the same way a “defenseless” reciever or QB is, but I thought sphering was still an infraction – you know, making your body a missle nailing someone with the crown of you helmet— specifically how Pierre Thomas was knocked out and consequently knocked out of the game as well. But I’ll let that one slide.
You see, my anger is directed at the one asinine prick who has pulled this kind of s*** the last couple of years. What kind of s*** you may ask? Not covering the ONLY guy on the field who can hurt you. Not covering the ONLY guy who hurt you the entire game. Electing instead to blitz everyone into a brick wall and “confuse” the opposing QB with the “look how f***** smart I am, I have more packages and allignments that Payton does on offfense” Gregg Williams ego maniac Mike Martz “I’m running this complicated defense no matter what personel I have no matter what preparation/offseason/new players I have” SOB MF Gregg Williams.
Gregg…. Who Dat? The turd who packed his bags and took a job in St. Louis with 4 minutes left in the game and allowed a fake a** QB who only averages less than 200 yards a game against s***** defenses to drive down the field on two occasions and score two touchdowns using the same Vernon Davis that hurt you all game. Is it too much to make a f****** adjustment after the first one and say “you know, there is only 90 seconds left, lets not get beat deep and force this jerkoff to settle for a FG at worst” or even “you know, that Vernon Davis made my defense look silly, and now might be the time to put everyone in coverage and try to keep everything underneath and in bounds”?
I want to show Gregg Williams what aggression is and how to use it. Sean Payton should have fired his a** after the first TD with less than 5 minutes and hired Gary Gibbs back to coach the remainder of the game. Every sane football mind must have been blown by Williams playcalling. Gregg, you wasted a Super Bowl year for Drew Brees and the rest of the team. I’d like to lock you in a room, bottle up all the flatuation in the world, and force you to breathe that the rest of your life. It smells like s***, and it’s sick, and that’s exactly the taste you left every Saints fan.
I lterally threw up as soon as the game was over and went to bed before the NE/DEN game. This is the first time I’ve been able to assimilate some of my thoughts and vent. This season needs to end quick.

Well, here's why
After overcoming 5 turnovers, Drew Brees and the offense scored two touchdowns with less than five minutes left to take the lead twice. They overcame adversity in THAT game and EARNED a win, despite how terrible the first half looked at times.
LSU just didn’t show up. They did nothing in the game that led you to believe they would win it, or even give you hope that they would win it. Same result, but losing a close one hurts more than just getting blown out.
