I love the Saints. I love Drew Brees. Drew has certainly done more for the team than any single player in the history of the franchise. He deserves to get paid. There is just one thing that keeps me from rallying behind Breesus in his demand for money. Well, maybe more than one.
Great as Drew is, none of what's been accomplished since he showed up has been done alone. None of it. Seems to me that he's had a fairly decent team around him. Maybe not defense so much, but he's certainly had a few players helping on offense. Colston who doesn't seem to mind getting clobbered if it means he catches the ball. PT with his seeming aversion to the ground. Moore who I can only describe as some kind of crazy jack russel terrier with some of what I've seen him do. I don't think Jimmy Graham needs anything else said beyond Jimmy Graham. Ditto for Darren Sproles. Evans, Nicks while he was with us, DLP, Ivory... there have been a few other pieces to the puzzle.
Yes, I know Drew's presence raises up everyone else around him, but Drew ain't done anything alone. Between him and the rest of the offense we were able to mostly cover a lackluster defense the past two years. Mostly.
I guess the Colts are the big thing that keeps me from being willing to give Drew everything. The Colts gave Manning everything and we've all seen what happened there. The best quarterback in the world can't make up for everything else.
Guess my thing is that I think the Saints can still do well with a less amazing quarterback. And if they can improve the defense, I think they'd still be contenders with a merely good quarterback. Sure, we wouldn't see blowouts like we've come to enjoy, but I'm pretty sure we'd still win.
I could be completely wrong in my thinking. I don't know all of the numbers we're working with salary wise. I just don't think Drew is worth the house. He's worth most of it, but not all of it.
