Admittedly, this is all speculation; I know nothing about the inner workings of the NFL nor that of the agent/player to team mediation process, and I believe Mickey Loomis and Drew Brees are are trying their hardest to solve this salary cap dilemma, and it ain't easy looking at the numbers required to crunch and comprise our current clusterfart of a cap space problem we are all staring at. But really, Loomis saying Brees is "not great" and the whole inane "bounty hunt" media storm? Are we watching the behind-the scenes-influence of NFL agents at work? Isn't it suspicious all this stuff is coming out now at the crucial time when the most powerful sports agent in the NFL is about to land his biggest deal in NFL history? This all smells fishy...
Look, I would never implicate Brees in any of this. I believe that he deserves whatever money possible. I would also love to see Nicks and Colston and Meachem. (yes, Meachem, I think he is an asset to our deep threat playbook and he is insane blocker ((watch the tape)). [I also own his jersey so I understand if others aren't nearly enthusiastic as I am]. Anyways... I don't believe the players are behind this. I mean come one. Really?! Two days before the franchise tag and all this crap going on?! I think Condon might have pulled all this "sudden news" about Kurt Warner being hit for a bounty in order to smear the Saints organization reputation. I mean, honestly, when I go on NFL.com and they are interviewing Kurt Warner and Darren Sharper about "breaking news" I start to smell something. Perhaps this is just the moosedenied fan in me, but I am cynical of all this. The Brees contract is easily the most important contract of the last five years, and arguably of Condon's career. He has had image to go against because the Saints (with the help of the amazing, wonderful, Drew Brees) have created the type of sports organization everyone admires, respects, and downright loves. It's hard to smear crap on the story that they all made money on for years by repeating Katrina, community, etc. back in the days when we were underdogs. But I think Condon is doing his best in painting the Saints organization as this bounty hunting morally vacant team that will stop at nothing to hurt other players and never looks out for the team as whole. Perhaps I am paranoid, ( grandmaster, I'm sorry) but I'm not sure how he has the power to do that. If he does, that's terrifying. It's the necessary stirring up needed to perhaps tip the public image to favor Drew Brees over the Saints. In all honesty they have been so closey linked in all our minds, that now we are faced with this existenstial crisis of watching them disagree is akin to divorce court. How do we separate our love from Drew Brees from our love of the Saints? I think Condon is asking this of us.
Again this is speculation. I would never think Breesus would go so far as that, but I do think there is a sudden swift surge of a national media campaign funded to tarnish the image of our Saints (cough, Condon, cough) but I don't think it will work. Frankly its terrifying to think about if he has this much power (but he is the most powerful agent in the league) but I think he is underestimating how much this fan base loves the Saints. And how much we love Brees. So let the behind-the-curtain-powers stir up two year old controversies; let's ignore it them and their passé news clips. I support the New Orleans Saints, no matter what. I will support Brees because that man has shown me now reason not to. Please let all of this politics pass, and let none of our love of our team, our players, and our sport being ruined by all this crap.
