Before the preseason begins, there is usually increased optimism for the rehabbed player, the underachiever, and the rookie. But it seems that every season, there are at least a couple of guys that sort of surprise us that just get cut that we thought would have some role. Here's my best 3 guesses.
Today, the Saints have younger guys who can compete for the role of "what might be". Nick Toon, Joe Morgan, Courtney Roby, and Andy Tanner have to be winning the battle over AA at this point. And to think this was supposed to be his coming out party that he's been waiting for. Meachem finally left, Arrington was supposed to kick the doors down.
2) Remi Ayodele. Once a Saints starter, he may not be worth keeping anymore. With Bunkley and Ellis projected to start, there is still an exciting prospect in Akiem Nicks and a solid performer in Tom Johnson ready to fill in. Tyrunn Walker might make his own little run at a job. The Saints are no strangers at taking shots at the DT position. And with Spags as the new DC, Ayodele is just another guy to him.
3) Elbert Mack. I guess I mention him because I thought he had the most NFL experience out of the 3 main guys shooting for the 3rd and 4th CB spots. So I saw an edge there. I'm pretty impressed with Marquis Johnson so far considering what he's expected to be. Mack is only 26 years old, but I think his real battle is with rookie Corey White for that 5th CB position at this point. I didn't think it would be a battle that he could lose, but I think that even with a lack of depth at CB, Mack may actually not make this roster.
By the way, say goodbye to Sean Canfield. You know, if you want to and all.
