Saints News, 10/22/13: Saints Promote QB Ryan Griffin From Practice Squad To Active Roster

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

No, there is nothing wrong with Drew Brees or Luke McCown. This move was reportedly made because one or more QB-needy teams were on the verge of signing Ryan Griffin from the Saints' practice squad. The most likely team was the Rams after they just lost Sam Bradford for the season because of injury. Coach Payton obviously thinks a lot of Ryan Griffin and wasn't willing to lose him. The Saints now have three QBs on the active roster. OLB Martez Wilson was waived in order to make room. How long can they keep three QBs on the roster? Will the day come this season where Payton is forced to use Griffin's roster spot on a position they are in greater need of? Would Coach cut Luke McCown before cutting Griffin? This is an interesting turn of events and I'm curious to see how it plays out. In other news, Jonathan Vilma was reportedly moving around very well yesterday in his first practice with the team since preseason. It's looking good so far that he may be able to return in week 9.

Out of sight, out of mind? The Saints (5-1) fell two spots after their bye week, which is unusual because they fell only one spot after losing in Week 6. But it’s understandable because the new No. 2 Indianapolis Colts and No. 4 Seattle Seahawks both had impressive victories in Week 7.
