Saints News, 11/5/13: Sloppy Saints Have Many Fans Concerned

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY

Film study articles on the Saints' sloppy loss to the Jets basically tell us what we already knew from watching the game Sunday. It wasn't just poor play from the offensive line that doomed their chance at a win, but also poor defensive play, penalties, and questionable play-calling. That said, Rex Ryan and the Jets deserve credit for rising to the occasion and playing inspired football. Coach Payton lamented yesterday that everyone in the building knew the Jets were going to run the ball and yet they still weren't able to stop it. Can the Saints figure out all of their deficiencies before DeMarcus Ware and the Cowboys come to town? The O-line really needs to figure out what ails them and pronto! They're spending way too much time helping Drew Brees off the turf following plays. At the present rate of pressures and sacks, he may not survive the season. Who knew we'd miss Aaron Kromer this much?

Saints vs. Jets: 6 and “2″ Many Mistakes - Chicks in the Huddle
Perhaps it was the group of 300 lb. men behind me in Metlife Stadium, all of whom seemed like extras from The Sopranos, or maybe the fact that my toes had been frozen solid since halftime, or that I had seen Drew Brees get put on his back more times than Kim Kardashian (Hey, oh!) but for some reason, the Saints loss to the New York Jets on Sunday took a while to settle in. I never thought they would run away with the game but I certainly thought the Saints were the better team and should win. And yet, they fall short, in shocking fashion.

Forecast: Welcome to first crisis of Saints 2013 season | wwltv.com New Orleans
After eight weeks the question isn’t, "Can the Saints offensive line start to play up to the standard we are used to?" It’s, "Can the offensive line improve just enough so their poor play doesn’t cause the 2013 season to implode."

With one exception, criticism falls on the shoulders of quarterback Drew Brees, who picked the most inopportune moments at MetLife Stadium to not be his normal self. It falls on his offensive line which failed to keep the Jets' interior pass rush at a distance. Instead, center Brian de la Puente and guards Jahari Evans and Ben Grubbs ended too many plays by helping their quarterback back to his feet. That meant some routes down field didn't have enough time to develop.
