What's up guys I'm a new member but have been an avid Saints fan all of my life -- I basically worship Drew Brees as a deity (God bless his throwing arm) and despise all things out of Atlanta. This is my first post here and I openly admit I'm rather inexperienced so if I make any mistakes or have any facts wrong don't hesitate to point them out. This is the first draft I've actually gotten into mainly due to recently getting into fantasy football (team name: Vilma the Bounty Hunter).
The two biggest names the Saints were looking to sign since signing cornerback Keenan Lewis have been former Cowboys linebacker Victor Butler and former Raiders and Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. As of three days ago, Asomugha was reportedly torn between the 49ers and Saints with the Saints and Rob Ryan pushing hard to land him. Earlier today however, it broke that the Saints had just picked up former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Victor Butler. With this two-year deal, one can assume there is even further strain on the remaining salary cap and the ability to sign Asomugha has probably been greatly diminished unless Payloo performs some sort of crazy voodoo magic.
Asomugha on the other hand played his first 8 years on the Oakland Raiders having a breakout year in his 2006 campaign with 50 tackles, 8 interceptions, 1 touchdown, 1 forced fumble, and 1 sack. From that year to his departure to the eagles he was arguably the best cornerback in the league and as well as the least targeted one (just under 30 targets for each of the next 4 years). He is a three-time pro-bowler and a two-time Raider MVP. Though he was the hottest free agent on the market before signing with the Eagles he has since dropped in value drastically due to extremely poor performance in the Eagle's secondary over the last two years perhaps due to some aging athleticism (about to turn 32) and unsuitable zone coverage in the Eagle's mediocre passing defensive scheme.
So this brings us to the question:
Who would you rather: Butler or Asomugha? It is important to point out that both players have played under Rob Ryan -- Butler in Dallas and Asomugha in Oakland. Butler is a young linebacker with great promise that could be versitile in the new 3-4 system of Rob Ryan, while Asomugha is a seasoned veteran that could strength the Saint's pass defense and was once the best of his position but since has declined with age.
And what implications do you think choosing Butler has on our first round draft pick? Where should Butler be placed in the defense -- Defensive line or Linebacker? If he plays linebacker should we still pick up Jarvis Jones if available or should we target a defensive tackle such as Sheldon Richardson (if available) or safety such as Kenny Vaccaro? In other words, what's your first round draft pick - Jarvis Jones, Sheldon Richardson, Kenny Vaccaro, Alec Ogletree, Bjeorn Worner (I'm sure I spelled this wrong but I'm lazy) or other?Leave a comment below!
