According to Gil Brandt, the Saints sent five defensive line coaches as well as Director of College Scouting Rick Reiprish to attend a private workout by Purdue's Kawann Short, scheduled because of his recent hamstring injury.
The injury kept Short from performing at the NFL Scouting Combine as well as Purdue's Pro Day that was held on March 1st. Nineteen other NFL teams were present at the workout as well.
Along with drills, Short participated in Combine style workouts. At 6'3" 303 pounds, Short ran his 40-yard dash in 5.08 and 5.09 seconds. He also had a 27-inch vertical, 8'4" broad jump, and 29 reps of 225 pounds.
Short got some major attention after the 2013 Senior Bowl where he was named the North's top player after having three tackles with one for a loss.
During his college career at Purdue, Short had 186 tackles, 49 tackles for a loss, 19.5 sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He also deflected 17 passes along the defensive line.
If the Saints are interested in Short they may have to strike early. As the weeks roll closer toward the 2013 NFL Draft he is being talked up as a possible first round talent.
