Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
When you think of the New York Giants, what comes to mind? I'm sure some people will say Eli Manning and some of his clutch performances in the Super Bowl runs, but I hope that most people will say defensive linemen. Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul, Barry Cofield, Chris Canty, and Rocky Bernard are some of the names that come to mind from the Giants' recent teams. And if you dig through the long history of the Giants you will find many more names that stand out from their defensive lines. I guess you could think of the Saints defensive line as the polar opposite of the Giants...I find myself quite envious of their front four every season because of how poorly ours performs.
Enough about my D-line envy, though. As I look at the draft board, I see a couple of good options for the Giants to once again restock their defensive line with a player to wreak havoc against opposing offenses. At first, I thought of taking Bjoern Werner. I mean, Umenyiora signed with our beloved Falcants and Tuck isn't what he used to be. I also thought about Alec Ogletree...he'd fit in perfectly on the weakside next to Dan Connor. However, I was SHOCKED when I noticed that Sheldon Richardson was available at 19.
Richardson will be one of the most athletic DTs in the league. His coaches actually dropped him back into coverage...that is how athletic he is. He improved his 40 time from 5.02 at the combine to 4.71-4.82 at the Missouri Pro Day. That's fast for somebody who weighs in just shy of 300 pounds! I certainly don't want him running free at Brees anytime. He has a good body for playing in the trenches, but needs a little bit of coaching to help with holding firm against the blockers. He also needs a little more upper body strength to help there, but he can take care of that with proper conditioning. If the Saints weren't switching to the 3-4, I'd be lobbying hard for us to take him at 15.
Other possibilities: Bjoern Werner (DE), Alec Ogletree (ILB), Jonathon Cooper (OG)
