Keenan Allen, WR, California
Nice sized wideout who consistently makes positive plays for the offense. Extends and catches the pass away from his frame, boxes out defenders and effectively runs after the reception. Pulls the throw out the air. Displays, concentration, focus, timing.
Not quick off the line of scrimmage. Does not have the second gear or have separation downfield.
No, that's not Keenan Allen's scouting report, though it might as well be. It's the 2003 draft report on Anquan Boldin, to whom Allen is consistently compared. Shows how effective that report was. Boldin may not be lighting it up a la Calvin Johnson but he nevertheless is one of the best receivers in the NFL. If you can't believe it, then just ask Kurt Warner or Joe Flacco.
In that same way, Allen brings a certain toughness and strength to the field. He may not be the quickest, but there is always a place in the NFL for big, strong receivers who can punish defenders. Mike Mayock even said on his evaluations that he would "bang the table" for Allen were he (Mayock) in a war room.
Adding Allen on the outside along with the newly added Amendola plus Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski dominating the middle has to be a delectable proposition for Darth Hoodie and his minion Darth McDaniels. Even though Tom Brady doesn't get a bona fide burner, he does get an excellent outside receiver for the first time in seemingly forever. If that doesn't keep defensive coordinators and players up at night, then nothing will.
