Jonathan Cyprien, S, Florida International

Jonathan Cyprien

#7 / Strong Safety / Fla. International Golden Panthers

This was a tough pick for a few reasons. First, the 49ers are fairly solid across the board. They just went to the Super Bowl and made it quite an interesting game against the Ravens. The 49ers sport a young, mobile QB, have good depth at RB, a very good TE, OK receivers and a good O-line. On defense, they have been near the top of the rankings the past few seasons and we would start most of their players over ours.

They lost Dashon Gholdson to our rivals in Tampa Bay, so they will be looking for a safety at some point in the draft. And Justin Smith is getting older (33) and is coming off a triceps injury from last season...they missed his normal production during their Super Bowl run as he didn't have any sacks. I was actually going to pick Tank Carradine, but our friend Dave Choate took him off the board with the Falcons pick. As much as I wanted to pick a defensive end, I couldn't find one that really made sense at 31 (Margus Hunt might be a bit raw for their liking). So I went for safety and picked Cyprien here (guess this might land me on Stu's List!)

John Cyprien is a hard hitter with good range and the speed to close in on the ball. He has good size (6'-0", 217 lbs) and isn't afraid to mix it up against the run. He is quite versatile as a safety and can do it all...he can cover TEs and slot receivers when needed. He has been a starter four years and isn't a project. He even plays with the swagger that we hear so much about our defense lacking this past season. He'd fit in well with a 49er squad that definitely carries a lot of swagger and is able to back it up.

As for weaknesses, he does tend to be a bit aggressive and might get beaten a few times until he learns from his mistakes. That said, when playing for a team with the depth the 49ers have, he probably won't take too many lumps. Personally, if we could convince the 49ers to trade up and take Vacarro, I'd be happy to land Cyprien here and pick up a couple of extra picks. I think Cyprien is going to be a Pro-Bowler and impact player for many years to come.

Other possibilities: Margus Hunt (DE), Alec Ogletree (ILB), Zach Ertz (TE), Sylvester Williams (NT)
