Before the draft, I have mentioned my concern with the group of WRs that are left just 2 years after having the foursome of Colston, Moore, Henderson, and Meachem. While I would agree that Henderson and Meachem underachieved versus expectation in a Saints uniform, they made for some pretty comfortable pass options. Okay, there was a drop here or there, but both guys also had some memorable plays where hard work and effort paid off. To me, that foursome at WR was a group that I was confident in because of what seemed to be great chemistry with the man that needs no introduction to my little CSC fanpost.
While it seems like Sir Drew can chunk it for 5K with anyone at WR, the foursome played together with Sir Drew from 2008-2011. Four seasons, same weapons. The foursome became a threesome in 2012, with a special appearance by Joe Morgan who hoped to make it a foursome once again. But Devery underachieved in an offense where there are plenty of passes to be had. Maybe its time to move on...
There's no doubt where Marques Colston and Lance Moore fit on this roster. Joe Morgan is almost guaranteed a spot, but I believe that the other 2 (maybe 3?) spots are wide open. (This includes Courtney Roby)
Nick Toon seems like a favorite to win a spot on the team. As a betting man, it seems like a pretty safe choice. He was drafted 4th round by the Saints last year with the loss of Meachem, but of course never saw the field. At this point, I don't see why he currently has any advantage over any of the other candidates outside of his good size and once productive college career. Don't get me wrong, I hope he makes a strong push for the position. I liked the pick in 2012, actually thought we got a steal. But there are a few guys that will give him some competition for one of those spots.
Courtney Roby is a bit of a wild card. He has never done much in any offense as a WR, but contributes year after year on special teams. Has the time come where Roby will not fit on the roster? Will he once again be the #5 WR? Or will the Saints hold 6 WRs this year?
While Colston, Moore, Morgan, Toon, and Roby seem to be a likely 5 WRs to be on the 53 man roster, a few other guys will make things interesting.
The selection of Kenny Stills in the 5th round told me that the Saints are not sold on what was currently on the roster and/or is too talented to pass up that late. This is one of the few guys that I will be watching very closely in August. Because the playing field between Toon and Stills seems to be pretty even, I believe that unless the Saints keep 6 or cut Roby, one of these 2 guys will see the practice squad in 2013. Question is...which one?
You may remember Preston Parker from his days in Tampa Bay. After a 40 catch, 3 TD season in 2011, the Bucs added Vincent Jackson, Tiquan Underwood beat Parker out, and knocked him off the roster in 2012. He's still young, so this may be the chance that Parker has been looking for. While his talent doesn't WOW me, there always seems to be some sort of surprise by a Sean Payton coached team when it comes time to cut rosters. I think the odds of he making the team are very slim. He's not that fast and has decent hands, but if he has a good camp and overachieves in preseason, he could make a run at a spot if the younger guys struggle.
Andy Tanner may be the most interesting underdog of all. I remember being really impressed with his ability in preseason last year. He made some nice plays, but of course you have to take preseason for what it is. The guy seems fast and quick to me and I seem to remember he having pretty good hands. He may also be a long shot as I believe that he is still eligible for the practice squad.
So while the offense has not been a concern for some time now, it's hard to ignore how inexperienced the WR position will be beyond Colston and Moore. Morgan still has to prove that he's more than a one trick pony, and the rest of the guys are well....just guys as of now. It should be really interesting how this group shapes up to start the 2013 season.
