Saints Preseason News, 8/21/13: Saints Release OT Jason Smith

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

The former no. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft (Rams) was outplayed by both Charles Brown and rookie Terron Armstead in Saints training camp and preseason. Good luck to him. In other more alarming news, Pro-Bowl guard Jahri Evans missed practice today due to an undisclosed ailment. Pardon me while I assume the worst and soil myself. Let's hope it's only minor and he returns to practice tomorrow.

The Bears "stole" Bushrod away from the Saints by signing him to a five-year, $35.965 million contract in March to help their historically horrid offensive line, and in that context, Bushrod will be an interstellar upgrade over J’Marcus Webb, who will now switch from left to right tackle. At least, that’s the narrative … but the stats may tell a different story. In truth, Bushrod is an average pass protector who has been made to look better than he is by Drew Brees’ pocket movement, and in 2012, he wasn’t that much better than Webb.
