Saints News, 9/3/13: Saints Confirm WR Robert Meachem Signed To 1-Year Deal Today

Andy Lyons

This is very surprising. If the Saints had waited until next week to sign him, they reportedly could have cut him at some later point and not been on the hook for his full salary. Now it looks like they're committed and this isn't just a temporary "retire as a Saint" signing. Meachem was recently released by the Chargers after a disappointing short run there. To make room for him on the 53-man roster, the Saints placed LB Jonathan Vilma on IR with designation to return later this season.

However, it likely won’t be before the Falcons game.  As a vested veteran with more than four years in the NFL, if the Saints signed him before the first game, the team would be on the hook for his entire contract for the whole season.  Under NFL rules, if they sign him in week two, they could then cut him at any point later in the season and not owe him any contract money.
