Mel Kiper is at it again with yet another 2014 NFL mock draft for ESPN, his third of the off-season. This time around, he's taking NFL free agency into account when making his selection for each team. So who does he have for the Saints now that the team has signed Jairus Byrd?
Kiper has the Saints selecting defensive end Dee Ford from Auburn. Here is how Kiper defends his choice:
Analysis: The Saints have made a big bet at safety with the addition of Jairus Byrd, but while the back end of the defense is locked down, and the front is in decent shape with the growth of Cameron Jordan, John Jenkins and Akiem Hicks, the Saints could really use an edge rusher. Ford isn't a three-down player, but he can be a constant problem for offenses when he's on the field as a speed rusher. Given the QBs the Saints have to deal with, speed off the edge will be useful.
Yeah, I guess I'm okay with this. Would rather the Saints take a cornerback since I that still remains their biggest need, but I think this is the best player available in Kiper's mock. I suppose a speedy pass rusher could also offset a deficiency in the secondary.
I know Ford's name has been tossed around a lot, giving me the impression a lot of Saints fans would like to see Kiper's mock come to fruition. What do you think?
