Saints News, 3/20/14: Saints GM Mickey Loomis Continues To Create More Salary Cap Space

After some recent financial wizardry, Mickey Loomis now has the Saints $3,089,212 under the cap, according to the NFLPA. Pierre Thomas' recent contract extension helped save the team $1.3 million in cap space and a restructuring of Keenan Lewis' contract saves them $1.2 million this year. This $3,089,212 cap space figure includes the new contracts for wide receiver Joe Morgan and linebacker Ramon Humber. Does Mickey have some other possible free agent acquisitions in mind and would they include re-signing center Brian de la Puente?

The cash-strapped Saints made room for the market’s most expensive safety rather than re-signing the cheaper Jenkins, who had performed relatively well not just as a centerfielder but also as a nickel slot corner. Generally, this would be an indication that the departing player was a locker room headache. But there have never been such reports about Jenkins, who was a team captain the past two seasons.
