New Orleans Saints Agree to One Year Deal with Luke McCown

Kevin C. Cox

The Saints have agreed to a one year deal for Luke, who served last season as holder for field goals and extra points, as well as back up to Drew Brees.

Last season, backup Bears QB Josh McCown had a chance to shine when he filled in for an injured Jay Cutler. His quality performance landed him a job this year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Fans from the WhoDat Nation hope his younger brother won't get a similar opportunity to shine in New Orleans.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis announced Wednesday that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with quarterback Luke McCown. McCown, a 2004 fourth-round selection of the Cleveland Browns, is a 6-foot-4, 217-pound signal-caller entering his 11th NFL season. Last season, he served as Drew Brees' backup and as the holder on field goal and extra point attempts. It was his second stint with the Saints, where he was initially under contract from June through August 2012 before heading to Atlanta to replace Chris Redman.

From NewOrleansSaints.com:
A native of Jacksonville, Texas who went on to star at Louisiana Tech, McCown has played in 38 career games with nine starts in stints with Cleveland (2004), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2005-08), the Jacksonville Jaguars (2009-11), the Atlanta Falcons (2012) and the Saints (2013). He has completed 184-of-317 career pass attempts for 2,035 yards with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a passer rating of 68.3. He has also carried 34 times for 177 yards (5.2 avg.).

In the 2013 preseason, McCown completed 32-of-49 passes for 378 yards (65.3%) with four touchdowns, one interception and a 107.4 passer rating. In his one regular season with the Saints, he only threw one incomplete pass and had three rushes for -4 yards; but he appeared in all 16 regular-season games and both postseason contests as the club's holder. This coming preseason, he will likely be working with the "second team" in camp while he continues to serve as mentor to QB Ryan Griffin, last year's rookie from Tulane.
