Saints News, 3/4/14: Loomis Confident Deal With Graham Will Be Reached

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

“We haven’t been through this process [before],” Loomis told Rich Gannon and Bruce Murray of SiriusXM NFL Radio. “All we do is franchise him, and it’s out of our hands.” Loomis then said, “These negotiations are always a process, and Jimmy’s been a great player for us for the last four years.... Look, I had hoped and I’m sure he had hoped we’d come to some conclusion on a longer-term deal before this. But we haven’t yet, and hopefully we will. . . . We’ll just let it play out, and I’m sure we’ll get something resolved.”

The Saints are likely to give Graham the long-term contract he wants before the July 15 deadline for doing a multi-year deal.  If an acceptable agreement isn’t reached, Graham should still wait to sign, skipping training camp and the preseason and showing up as close to the start of the regular season as possible before inking the tender and getting the full amount of the contract with no penalties for holding out, since a guy can’t be fined for holding out if he’s not under contract.

The Saints slapped a franchise tag on Jimmy Graham, allowing them to keep him for one season without negotiating a new deal. But Graham has been designated a tight end; he believes he's a receiver. This is not an academic point: there is more than $5 million at stake.
