Respect

I think it is fascinating, for anyone who has been on this board awhile to look back over the last few years. Do you remember everyone whining about how the Saints don't get no respect? I can remember that up through the year that I got so disgusted with the NFL that I had to leave for awhile (wanna guess which year that was?). I used to have a signature saying that we were destined for dynasty. Now, it is clear that Goodell, if not the whole League, as absolutely adamant that a dynasty should no longer exist. It's bad for business and they will do anything imaginable to keep it from happening. Isn't it interesting that the two most renegade coaches are the only ones that seem to have gotten burned, learned their lesson and are, at least, putting together teams that can be viewed as a continuous contender. I am beginning to wonder if Carroll will join the club soon. Anyways, sorry for the digression. I just despise business effects on anything and everything. Makes me feel soiled.

Back to respect. It just struck me how much that respect has changed. The football world now, clearly, views the Saints as a consistent contender. Really. I was just looking at the odds for the Saints/Colts game and it's not even close. They show the Saints with a 61% chance to win the game. I would have expected something closer to 50%. Indy is no slouch at all and is in sort of the situation we howled about in the past. No respect. I think it is just so refreshing to have the kettle on the other foot (or whatever the correct metaphor is). Do you remember those days? That it didn't matter how bad the team was, it was almost assured that we would be expected to lose. Of course, the flipside of the playing field is that I can remember friends, in the distant past who made themselves rich betting against the Saints. You could be guaranteed that the Saints could miss any spread.

Another thing that used to happen is that the nationally known analysts would make really stupid comments about the Saints because, clearly, they had not taken the time to watch the game. No doubt about it, there are noly so many games that most people are willling to watch and very few will watch any after the fact. That is happening less and less. Knowing where the Saints are in the scheme of things is becoming de rigeur mortis. Of course, the Saints low key players probably drive the media insane. How refreshing. An insane media and players that have some class.

Anyway, I don't think that there is any lack of respect left for the Saints.
