2008 Training Camp Review - Day 3

Welcome to another episode of "As the Knee Turns." In this episode, our main character, Deuce, suffers a minor setback and must miss morning practice to have an MRI taken. As bad luck would have it, at that very moment, the Oakland Raiders were cutting ties with running back Lamont Jordan, leaving everyone, including the Saints front office to wonder if Jordan was really what this team needed and whether Deuce would be forced to make an early exit. Luck was on our hero's side however, as his MRI results were negative and Jordan declined an offer, and he was able to make a triumphant return to the practice fields that very afternoon, never knowing how close he had come to being replaced. Don't miss the next episode of "As the Knee Turns," when cornerback Mike McKenzie's recovery takes longer than expected and Jason David sleeps with his wife.

Saints News: 7.09.08

I think I see the back of Drew's head. (Photo Source)

The USO tour is already underway and NFL.com and the New Orleans Saints official website both had stories. Here and there. They just announced it yesterday, I didn't realize they were leaving so soon. The following is from the Saints official website.

“It makes me very proud to be able to experience a USO tour,” said Brees. “It is humbling experience, and one that leaves you with indelible memories. I know that the NFL has a proud history of great players that have been able to go on USO Tours and I take the endeavor seriously and hope to be able to impart to the people that we will come in contact with how much we appreciate their efforts and sacrifices.”

And this is pretty much the only mention of Drew in the NFL.com article. Guess they were more impressed with Osi.

All told, the commissioner, Osi and Drew made contact with 500 soldiers at this first stop.

Matt LeBlanc (not that one) had an article at Houma Today, asking the questions whose answers will inevitably determine the fate of the Saints 2008 season. Its the same old questions: Deuce and Reggie, the cornerbacks, Vilma, Mehlhaff, etc.

The question all Saints fans want to know is if the team will rebound from a disappointing 7-9 record last season.

To answer that question, the team will have to answer a handful of other questions.

That is deep.

Rotoworld released its offensive line rankings for the 2008 season. Here is where the Saints stood.

21. Saints
2006: 28
2007: 11

This line played above its head in '06 and returned to earth last season. It's really a middle-of-the-pack group, but still talented (LT Jammal Brown, G Jahri Evans) with developmental depth (T Jermon Bushrod, G Andy Alleman). Sean Payton throws more than anyone, even Mike Martz, which helps Drew Brees' numbers but can leave the linemen out to dry.

Not too great. I thought we would get a little more respect.

Yesterday, it was mentioned yet again that the Saints were possible suitors for a trade with Oakland to attain Lamont Jordan. This time it was ESPN.com.

Are you like me? Do you stay awake at night wondering what Archie Manning thinks about Brett Favre and the whole retirement controversy? Well now we can all get some sleep, because the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has what we seek.

“I’m not saying Brett shouldn’t play some more,” Manning said. “I know Brett, but I don’t know everything going on with him. But early in my career, we went to play the Chargers one day and Johnny Unitas was in uniform, No. 19. It made me sad to see him in that uniform. Brett is physically better off than Johnny was at that stage of his career. But I personally don’t want to see Brett in another uniform.”

And what if Favre wants to play for the Packers?

“They’ve got a good team and good organization going there,” Manning said. “It does put them in a tough situation. So I hope it works out. I’m crazy about him and I want him to be happy.”

I just wanted to mention this too...

Manning, who will be among speakers at the annual meeting of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. financial representatives later this month in Milwaukee...

My god that man makes a ton of appearances! Do you think its like that movie Multiplicity where there are really like 3 Archie Mannings. One can go to Eli's game, the other, Peyton's all while the real Archie is giving a motivational speech at a deodorant sales convention.

Times-Pic Fantasy Football guru Ross Devonport is still looking for people to participate in a fantasy football mock draft this Thursday at 2pm. Get the info here.

Here is one I found. I really have no idea what its from, but its about the Saintsations and thats good enough for me. There are a lot of cuties in this one, but my fave is the one in the maroon sweatsuit. The best part comes at 4:15 in.

Saints News: 6.30.08

The beginning of yet another week.

Mike Detillier did his weekly Sunday morning article for Houma Today. This week he discusses RB Lamont Jordan and whether the Saints should pick him up.

What stood out to me after the 2008 draft is that the New Orleans Saints did not draft a running back.

Detillier thinks Jordan would be a good fit in the event that Deuce doesn't make a full recovery. The Raiders have a ton of other young running backs, so Jordan is expendable. He's got a pretty fat contract, so that may be a turn off for the Saints. If the Raiders cut him however, then New Orleans would have to fight with other teams but could work up a new contract.

The Ventura County Star in California had a piece about Saints TE Billy Miller and the training facility he has created called Elite Athletics.

"The NFL stands for Not For Long' and you never know when that time is going to come," said Miller, a Westlake High graduate entering his 10th season in the NFL. "I decided I wanted pull the trigger now because I won't have the same contacts and access as I do while I'm still playing."

It has become a place where any athlete of any level can come and work out.

"I don't need to get rich off of this," said Miller, who fully funded the facility. "This is something that is a passion for me. I didn't want to make this for guys like Reggie. I wanted to make this for little Joe down the street who wants to get a chance to step on the football field one day. He can come here, get better and finally play varsity one day."

"Working out at a training facility for $1,000 a month? Sorry, that is not something I could do," Miller said. "I opened this to make sure kids can come if they want to work. We are not here to just babysit. But if you want to work and get better we will find a way."

But it is for guys like Reggie too.

"I have been looking for a place where it's convenient, not too big, not too small and you are in good company with other NFL players," Bush said. "It is kind of tough to find a place like that, especially out here (in Southern California) because there is no NFL team."

Here is a video of Billy explaining everything.

Pro Football Weekly had a quick blurb about Mike McKenzie in their Whispers section.

Giants DE Justin Tuck Word out of New Orleans is Saints CB Mike McKenzie is on track to begin practicing when training camp begins on July 24. McKenzie sat out all of the team’s OTAs while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL he suffered late last season.

More important KUSH news. She is talking about marriage...AGAIN! This time, it was during her appearance on The View. This comes from BuddyTV.

“You spend a lot of time with someone, that's obviously what you think about, the future,” she said.  “There's [sic] always marriage rumors.  I figured you're either getting married, having a baby or breaking up.  No one's normal and happy.

“We're actually just normal and happy right now.”

“If we get married, obviously, you move in together and live together… New Orleans is a big part of my life but I'm not moving there right now.”

I really hope Reggie plans on popping the questions soon, otherwise he is going to make this girl look like an idiot.

Listen to this though. This is the part where I get angry.

Kim, who recently appeared on The View for the second time, revealed the new nickname she and Reggie coined together.

“We were tired of Bush and Tush so we came up with Kush, which is Kardashian and Bush.  So we call each other on the phone we programmed each other as Kush,” she shared with a laugh.

THATS MINE!!!! I came up with that!!! Refer to my posting  here on CSC on April 25th, when I first revealed my nickname for them.

everyone's favorite couple, "Kush" aka Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush.

I also refer to that name here and here. This is B.S. man! Son of a B****!

If you are interested in buying 50 yard line Saints season tickets, check here on Ebay.

If I remember correctly, today is the day NFL Live on ESPN will cover the Saints. Not positive, but you may want to check.

I will reveal the answers to yesterdays quiz this afternoon, that way if any of you still want to do it, you may. I will also have a cool announcement to make this afternoon.

Saints News: 6.27.08

More analysis from Bleacher Report. This time they are talking about the Saints offensive line and calling it "Beef Brisket."

Could "Beef Brisket" look so good. Most teams going into training camp would love to have the problem that the Saints have.

The whole article just says that we are fairly deep on the line and things look pretty good. Jonathan Goodwin will just step right up and fill in for Jeff Faine. Matt Lehr is versatile and added depth. Carl Nicks might stick around. Tim Duckworth may get more playing time.

Something is really off with this Bleacher Report writing, seriously. Check it out and tell me I'm not crazy.

2008 is Reggie Bush's do-or-die season says this quick post on NFL Gridiron Gab.

The fact of the matter is Bush does need to improve. His awareness in the run attack has been shaky, at best, and he has exchanged far too many decent gains for failed attempts at the monster play. Improving his patience and increasing his strength will naturally improve his numbers. But failing to do so will give the former No. 2 pick a three-year record of statistical mediocrity, something that fans will one day wake up and call bunk on. Once that moment comes, it will be extremely difficult to reverse. After all, Americans have proven before that they have no problem criticizing a Bush.

That about says it all.

Adam Schefter at NFL Network wrote an article discussing where some free agents may wind up playing this season. He says the Saints may be a possible destination for RB Lamont Jordan who most certainly will not be a Raider next season. Also of particular interest in the possibility of Joe Horn becoming a Cowboy.

» Wide receiver Joe Horn: Atlanta doesn’t want to pay Joe Horn’s $2.5 million base salary, which has a skill/injury guarantee. But Dallas might. In the event that it cannot reach a compromise deal with wide receiver Terry Glenn, Dallas already is eyeing Horn. He now has become Plan 1A. Should Dallas trade a late-round pick for Horn, he would be the latest big-name acquisition for a Cowboys team that this offseason already has acquired linebacker Zach Thomas, cornerback Adam Jones, running back Felix Jones and cornerback Mike Jenkins. Horn could help the Cowboys on and off the field. On the field, Horn is not the receiver he once was, but he still could contribute to Dallas’ high-powered attack. Off it, he could provide an example for the way professionals are supposed to act. Horn is one of the league’s more respected players and the Cowboys locker room would be better with him in it. Dallas is debating the merits of trading for Horn; those efforts could be, and will be, ramped up depending on what happens with Glenn.

Here are two videos from Cox Sports about Reggie Bush and Roman Harper.
