Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Saints 22, Falcons 16

It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win is a win. Moreover, this was a game that the Saints would have found a way to lose during weeks 1-4. So we celebrate today, while we wait for this team to look as dominant as they did in 2006.

Brees threw for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns, in a performance that certainly wasn't dominant. Bush was effective, particularly after the half. His touchdown and 2-point conversion plays really demonstrated why he was worthy of being the 2nd overall pick. The drive and power that he showed on the score were particularly impressive. Pierre Thomas made a fabulous run. I'd like to see him get more touches as this season progresses.

Defensively, Grant, Clancy and Bryant Young all sacked the quarterback. The Falcons moved the ball well through the air but only got one score. If Mike Vick had this Roddy White ... he still would've sucked. But Roddy White is pretty good, nonetheless.

I'll take Grant as my MVP.

I like how at the end of the game, the saint's announcers were wondering how the saints would burn 1 second of game clock on 4th down.  One announcer suggested that they should take a saftey and that brees has been practicing throwing the ball through the uprights just in case.  Wow.

Where's Grant in the actual poll??

I loved Grant's performance as well...but I think I'll hand the MVP trophy for this game to the OLine. As a group they've played LIGHT YEARS better the past three games.

Without Deuce we won't be able to equal last year's output, but here's hoping with a healthy Meachem down the stretch, we get moresigns of life to look forward to next year.

Of course, I am harboring a few delusions that we can actually bounce back and make the playoffs (becoming, as we know, the second team to accomplish that after an 0-4 start since the current playoff format began). But realistically, for us to be in that group we'd have needed to throttle the Falcons. That said, the schedule certainly works in our favor. So we'll see

There are signs of life, and this is good. Baby steps. It's like we're putting it all back together from scratch. There won't be any sudden resurgence. We should have beaten the Panthers; unbelievable that this squad could actually be 3-3. But what we've seen the last couple weeks is promising. And we're getting there slowly.

Since the days of Cam Cleeland I've been a huge fan of tight ends who can get open over the middle; perhaps we can get more consistency moving the ball if we get our own TEs more involved?

Who the hell knows; I'm just glad we're not 0-6. After our 0-3 start, I traveled from Los Angeles to N.O. for the Panthers game, traveled to Seattle for the Hawks game (though my ticket connection unfortunately fell through at the last minute), and I traveled back to N.O. for the Falcons game. Even if we were 0-6, my ass would still be buying tickets to see our boys. We'll get it all together eventually. Perhaps it's next year. But I'm glad we're not left for dead just yet.
