Saints Select K Taylor Mehlhaff in 6th Round

Taylor Mehlhaff (Scout.com)

With their final pick of the 2009 draft, the New Orleans Saints selected K Taylor Mehlhaff from Wisconsin. Here is his scouting report at NFL Draft Countdown.

Uuuuuhhhh...I don't really know how I feel about this one. This left-footer was the top rated kicker in this years draft. He has a strong leg and can kick in tough conditions. But couldn't we have addressed our kicking needs after the draft with FA. Did we have to use a pick on him? Aren't there more pressing needs? I agree this was a position that needed to be addressed, I'm just not sure it needed to be addressed in this manner.

What do you think?

Poll
How do you feel about this pick?
  • We need a go-to kicker. Games are won and lost by 3 points or less.
  • I don't know what the hell they were thinking.

i agree with you saintsational.  I think they should have been hoping and praying for the next Colston rather than the next Morton Anderson.

Wow, another lackluster draft by the Saints...

ha, the saints LISTENED!

so after I finished my previous inane post, the crazy Saints actually went out and got another Colston!  Well, he will probably not have the upside that Colston did (Colston being a virtual unknown) but what the heck!  We need somebody to play special teams next year and while a kicker is technically special teams, that's NOT what I'm talking about... ;)

haha

yeah, you called that one. As I was reading your post, I was watching Payton tell us on ESPN that they were taking Arrington. So now how do you feel about the draft?

videos make me happier

The vids you posted in the above make me a little happier. This O-lineman looks like he could be good if he can move his feet a little bit better.

The receiver Arrington also looks like he has a good upside just so long as he can stay out of trouble.  If he gets a work ethic, he could play next year.  The good part is that his trouble seems to all stem from one incident that does not indicate that Bourbon St will suck him in.

The goal is to get some guys who can contribute (unlike Mechum) and the Saints appear to have accomplished that.  Can't wait to see how training camp shapes up!

I'm more excited to see if Morgan and Vilma can play...
