NFL LOCKOUT UPDATE: Players Could Be Signed Today
John Clayton and I reporting major progress in talks today. Players committee meet Mobday in DC to hopefully recommend approval.
you can take it to the bank that the players are not going to ratify this proposal as currently presented. #nfl
One down, one to go. NFL owners approve CBA and settlement terms. Players now set for 8 p.m. conference call with reps.
The players are clearly excited about the agreement in the proposed CBA that would force teams to spend as much money as needed to reach the $120 million dollar threshold, but this deal could still hurt veterans on teams who have been aggressive with their spending and who find themselves over the proposed $120 million threshold. I might have found my answer. I’ve learned from people close to the negotiations that we may not see the massive cap casualties that we’ve expected. In fact, there may not be any penalties for teams who are over the $120 million dollar threshold. What that would allow teams to do is hang onto veterans, if they so choose, without penalty. What was less clear to me was whether or not we’ll actually even see a salary cap. It is my understanding that for the first few years of this deal, the "cap" on spending could be soft or even non-existant.
jeffduncantp Jeff Duncan Interesting. RT @Greg_A_Bedard: NFL source said Brees & Manning have requested to be exempt from franchise tag as part of the settlement GAAA!!!!! They're going to queer the deal!!
"If the NFL’s lockout denies coaches the necessary time with players, coaches will be significantly more limited in their ability to prepare their teams and to prove their value as coaches." The NFLCA said no amount of financial damages could compensate for the time lost this offseason, so they asked the 8th Circuit to uphold Judge Susan Richard Nelson’s injunction of the lockout to allow the players and coaches to get back to work.
Suffolk University (Boston) poll. Q56: "NFL work stoppage: Who do you blame?" Owners 32% Players 19% Not a fan 20% Undecided 30% Q57 "If games are missed due to the work stoppage, when NFL games return will you..:" Watch with same enthusiasm as 2010 34% Not an NFL fan 34% Of course, they also trust Fox News and Bill O'Reilly, so draw your own conclusions. Polled all 4 regions of the US but 33% from the South.
And maybe Mike Brown is content for the Bengals to be 4-12 each year as long as he can pay the players as little as he wants while still making a tidy profit. - M Florio
