When Saints owner Tom Benson bought the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets, we joked that Saints coach Sean Payton could spend his one-year suspension working for the team. As it turns out, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis will spend his half-year suspension doing just that. Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Loomis "likely" will oversee basketball operations for the Hornets.

Report: Loomis will oversee basketball operations of New Orleans Hornets | ProFootballTalk Mike F. makes a big leap with what he takes away from this story. But that's kind of his schtick, isn't it?

We are all very pleased to announce that football is back. And we believe collectively that our game will move forward stronger than ever. I wish to offer a sincere debt of gratitude to our fans for their patience and understanding. But now it is time to get back to the real business of football, and that is getting our team on the field to practice and play games. The Saints organization has been ready and prepared for this day and we look forward to having Saints football back for our fans very soon.

"We don't have any power," Benson said, downplaying his status in the area. "We don't look at it that way. I just love what we are doing. I'm looking forward to what we are trying to do in some of the other landscapes and some of the other businesses that we are in. I'm trying to encourage members of the Chamber of Commerce and other organizations that we need to get more locals to invest more. "If you look at the whole south region, the Saints are really important. Not Tom Benson, but the New Orleans Saints."

"Emotions were running us pretty good," Benson said Tuesday. "Everybody genuinely seemed to be very happy that New Orleans was going to get the Super Bowl. They seemed genuinely happy about it. When you look around, people had smiles on their faces and clapping and things like this. And not these (New Orleans) guys, I'm talking about the other owners out there. "We're just thrilled about what's going on. We're getting a new Superdome. Now we're going to get a Super Bowl on top of that. It couldn't be any more exciting than that."

"I don’t think Miami and Phoenix are taking it that way," said Benson of N.O.’s two competitors for the 2013 game. "I’m afraid that’s the way to turn people off. What happens is you get down to 32 people voting, secret ballot, and if you rub somebody the wrong way, they say, ‘the hell with you,’ even though they love New Orleans."
