Saints Training Camp Update - Day 3 (Morning)

FIrst off, Glenn Dorsey signed with the Kansas City Chiefs last night, so we should all now be on Sedrick Ellis watch. It should only be a matter of time before he gets signed and into camp.

I will update periodically with information as it is released, so make sure to check back often!

That being said, here are the offense and defense reports from Fox 40 out of camp from this morning.

Some of the offensive highlights.

9:10 a.m. With Deuce out of this practice it looks like Aaron Stecker is getting most of the 2nd team reps at running back behind Reggie Bush.

9:38 a.m. The QB's and receivers look a little out of sync in some of the early drills, Robert Meachem and Terrance Copper each had a drop on quick slants.

10:04 a.m. He's proven it his first two years in the league, but watching Marques Colston everyday you see how good this guy really is. Colston never seems to let a ball hit the ground and is so smooth in his route running.

10:17 a.m. Reggie Bush had a little trouble fielding punts yesterday, he stayed after practice in the morning for some extra work and looks a lot better catching them now in special teams drills.

10:39 We're now in full offense vs. defense and right off the bat Brees looked for Shockey down the middle but the pass was a little off. Pierre Thomas has had two nice runs in the last few plays.

10:45 a.m. It's day three and Shockey is still a fan favorite, he just caught a dump-off pass from Brees, nothing special, and received a huge ovation from the crowd as the ran down the sideline.

10:51 a.m. There are some questions surrounding Jonathan Goodwin who steps into the starter's role at center this season. Two straight plays Hollis Thomas has taken Goodwin to school in individual pass rush work.

10:57 a.m. We've got your play of the practice, Brees hit Colston with a beautiful spiral down the middle for about a 45-yard score. Next play Shockey wrestled a catch away from the defense, showing off that strength.

And some of the defensive highlights.

9:06 AM Both Mike McKenzie and Josh Bullocks are participating in walk-throughs. McKenzie's not in full gear, but Bullocks is suited up and looks like he may be ready to fully participate in today's practice.  We'll find out more about his status from Payton after practice.

10:04 AM The fans really want CB Jason David to do well. He got a loud cheer after he beat his receiver one-on-one.

10:40 AM In full offense/defense drills now, CB Aaron Glenn had some nice coverage on his receiver that forced an incompletion.

10:51 AM DT Hollis Thomas just rolled his blocker over in a pass-rush drill. Thomas is just too big, C Jonathan Goodwin never had a chance.

11:03 AM Josh  Bullocks definitely looks to be at full strength. He almost laid out his receiver on one play.

Larry Holder has his own notes from this mornings practice on his blog. Some highlights.

- RB Deuce McAllister missed his second consecutive practice after having fluid drained from his left knee because of swelling and he'll have an MRI this afternoon.

- In 11-on-11 work, Usama Young and Jason David lined up with the 1s with Randall Gay playing the nickel. Porter and Aaron Glenn manned the outside with the 2s with Craft at nickel.

- Payton plans on CB Tracy Porter fielding punt during special teams drills, but he worked as a gunner this morning. After a tough day in punt-return drills yesterday, Bush had a far better day Saturday despite fighting the sun.

Here is the Times-Pic review of the events of the morning practice. Some point to note.

-- Jason David stood out during one-on-one cover drills, not so much for his ball skills, which he displayed with a pair of nice break-ups, but more so because of his aggressiveness and take-no-prisoners attitude. We didn't see enough of that last year. His competitiveness is the kind of thing coaches will note in a crowded competition.

-- Biggest cheer of the morning was reserved for - surprise! - tight end Jeremy Shockey. The newest Saints star was greeted by a warm round of cheers and applause as he ran toward the bleachers after making a short catch during team drills.

The New Orleans Saints official website announced a few roster moves.

The New Orleans Saints have re-signed TE Buck Ortega and signed WR Curtis Hamilton, it was announced by the club today.

The team has also waived/injured WR Carlos Robinson and LS Ryan Senser.
