Saints 21 @ Rams 31: Game Ball of the Week

I hate writing these posts when the Saints lose. I especially hate writing them when the Saints lose to a winless opponent they were supposed to roll. And usually after embarrassments like these, there isn't much praise to go around so my job becomes that much more difficult.

But there was one player who stood out among the rest Sunday, enough for all of you to choose him as your Saints player of the game. Will Smith put together his best game of the season against the Rams. Here were his impressive numbers from the day:

vs STL / 10.30.11 Tackles Sacks Interceptions
Solo Ast Total Sacks Yds Int Yds IntTD
Will Smith 5 0 5 2 16 0 0 0

Smith is having a pretty good season also. Halfway through the year and he's just one sack shy of his total last year. He's currently on pace to have his third best season in terms of sacks. But he's also on schedule to have his worst season in terms of total tackles. Which doesn't surprise me; inconsistency has always been my one gripe with Smith. You just never know what you're going to get on any given day.

Still he's the team's best defensive lineman and in that category, he's been consistent. Each year we know Big Willy will get jiggy with it and put up at least respectable numbers, even if it means secretly playing through a sports hernia. And for that, we gotta love him for that.
