Fleur-de-Links - Feb. 22nd: Goodbye Jeremy Shockey, Thanks for the Memories

The news of TE Jeremy Shockey getting released dominates Saints headlines today. I'll miss his fiery personality. After rookie Jimmy Graham's breakout season last year, the writing seemed on the wall for the aging Shockey. Best of luck to him. He will be missed in Who Dat Nation.

Let's take a look at some highlights as a tribute to the Shockmeister. That long catch and run against Miami (at 1:35) is my all-time favorite Shockey moment.

Shockey was so difficult to deal with, most reporters just avoided him altogether. Even staffers hated having to deal with him.

Folks least upset about the Shockey release: The Nola media. Can't think of a player more universally reviled by local reporters.

Saints didn't want to keep around TE Jeremy Shockey and his $4.5 million in salary. Next big call is on Reggie Bush and his $11.8 million.

Good point. RT @: Assessing the Shockey trade, essentially traded him for Will Beatty. Jury's out on who got better end.

Jeremy Shockey's biggest contribution to N.O. came when he caught a two-yard TD to give Saints a fourth-quarter lead in Super Bowl XLIV.

Loomis & Payton's comments on Shockey have a hint of finality. In other words, they don't indicate the team is interested in re-signing him.

news makes perfect sense. He was scheduled to earn $5M in 2011 & had effectively been replaced as starter by Jimmy Graham.

As I predicted a month ago. RT @: I'm reporting the Saints are terminating the contract of TE Jeremy Shockey.

That's a wrap. Thanks to all the fans who met us out today. We will do it again soon!

Why the Saints released Jeremy Shockey - NFC South Blog - ESPN
Shockey is 30 and will be 31 before the season starts. Injuries have been an issue throughout Shockey’s career and he’s never played a full 16-game season. In his three seasons in New Orleans, Shockey missed eight games with various injuries. He’s not getting any younger and his durability is likely to decrease even more in the future.
