With the twenty-third pick of the 2011 CSC Community Mock Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles (represented by DeuceisLoose926) select...
Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
This was a tough selection for me, being that I watch the Eagles most every game of the season and know the ways of Andy Reid's waistline. The Eagles could go a number of different ways with this selection, but when it comes down to it the potential of the 6'8" Solder was too much to pass up. Last year, an OT named King Dunlap started a number of games for the Eagles, and he was filling in for longtime Eagles great Winston Justice, the man who once gave up six sacks in one half to Osi Umenyiora.
Jimmy Smith, the cornerback from Colorado was also given serious consideration. The defense definitely needs help after last season and they have a new DC, Juan Castillo, who also happens to have been the team's offensive line coach for the past 15 or so years. In the Eagles' defense, O-line coach is probably the one spot that could make the transition over to the defensive side of the ball.
However, when it comes down to it, this team needs to do a better job of protecting Mike Vick...Vick himself must also help with that role. While Solder is considered to be a bit of a project, he is 6'8" and is extremely athletic (he was recruited to Colorado as a TE). The Eagles have Jason Peters, who was a Pro Bowl left tackle last season. Solder may be able to sit for a year or two with Justice still under contract...or the team may try and allow him to protect Vick's blindside. The potential of Solder was just too much for the Eagles to pass up and that's why they go with much needed o-line help in the first round.
