Starting April 4th and continuing through April 29th, Canal Street Chronicles will be counting down the top 10 draft busts and then the top 10 draft successes in Saints history. Feel free to to use these posts as a springboard for discussion about how awful or how great each draft pick turned out.
For an explanation on how our draft successes work, go here.
The 1972 draft was the Saint's fifth draft as an organization and they were right on the money in the 3rd round. The Saints drafted Tom Myers, a safety out of Syracuse with the 74th pick and the Saints hit this one out of the park. Myers was the Saints starting free safety from 1972-1981. He played for ten seasons, all of them with the Saints. He was able to rack up 36 interceptions over his career and was able to run back two of them for touchdowns. Myers was also able to recover 15 fumbles and run back two of them.
Myers was also named to the Pro Bowl and named All-Pro in 1979. This was a huge achievement, as he was the first Saints safety to be named to earn the honor and the first Saint named to the first team All-Pro. Myers even attempted two passes in his final season before retiring. He scored a touchdown on one of those passes.
Of course, with safeties (as well as any defensive back), stats are hard to use to gauge how good a player actually is because the better defensive backs prevent big throws from happening and prevent drives from continuing. Because of this, I'm going to ask that the Saints fans who remembered Myers play to share some memories in the comment section and explain why you thought Myers was great.
