2011 Free Agency Update: Saints Sign S Paul Oliver

New, comments

This got a bit caught up in the wash today, but the team signed a free agent safety, Paul Oliver, formerly of the San Diego Chargers.

It first appeared to me on the Twitter:

ROSTER UPDATE: Saints agree to terms with TE David Thomas & S Paul Oliver

And clicking on that tiny url on the end led me to the story on the Saints site, bundled with the announcement of Baconator's signing.

Here's how the official news reads from the Saints:

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent TE David Thomas and S Paul Oliver today. The announcements were made by Saints' Executive VP/GM Mickey Loomis.

Then, after the part about Thomas, comes this stuff about Oliiver:

Oliver, 5-10, 210, was a fourth-round draft choice in the 2007 supplemental draft by the San Diego Chargers. The four-year veteran has appeared in 44 games with 11 starts for San Diego, recording 106 tackles (65 solo), three interceptions, six pass defenses, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and 20 special teams stops.

The former University of Georgia standout appeared in all 16 games with eight starts at strong safety for the Chargers in 2010 and finished with a career-high 60 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, a career-best and team-high two fumble recoveries, three pass defenses and four special teams stops.

Larry Holder speculates, and then promises news on cuts:

Oliver does play free safety. So could this mean the end for Darren Sharper?

More Saints cuts are coming. If I don't get them tonight, I'll have them tomorrow.
