Saints guard Carl Nicks was a guest on Sirius XM NFL Radio today and one of the topics of conversation was his contract, naturally. Nicks gave listeners an update on the status of negotiations with the Saints - of which there are none - and dropped a surprising little nugget of information about his financial desires: he wants to be the highest paid guard in the NFL.
If you didn't listen to the show, Jim Miller had two tweets earlier today summing up the conversation:
Saints All- Pro Guard Carl Nicks just stated on SiriusXM NFL Radio he has not talked at all with Saints about new contract... Nicks said new contract has to be more than teammate J Evans $ 56.7 M dollar deal.
This really isn't good news. The Saints will already need to break the bank for Drew Brees. If they keep their wallet open for Nicks, there isn't going to be much left to go around for everyone else. That could mean the Franchise Tag for Nicks this year, unless the Saints don't need to use it on Drew Brees instead.
The Evans deal is for seven years, meaning he averages $8.1 million a year. So how much does Nicks want to get paid? $9 million per year?
