With the twelfth pick of the 2012 CSC Community Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks (chosen by BASAINT) select...

Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Pete Carroll will feel like he has died and woke up with a So Cal co-ed if Melvin Ingram falls to him here (wait...half of that has already happened)! Melvin Ingram, a defensive end from the University of South Carolina, comes in at 6 foot 1 and 264 lbs. He will be the best DL in the draft, in my opinion. A lot of people would like to see Quinton Coples out of North Carolina but I see him as a boom or bust type prospect. Many experts are scared that once he gets his guaranteed dollars he may lose his motivation.

I can guarantee that you won't see that with Melvin Ingram. He has seen elite competition from playing in the SEC. The thing that stood out most to me about Ingram had to be his hands. I have heard the force that his hands come down with is comparable to the late great Reggie White. You have to admit, that is quite the compliment. Melvin Ingram has a first blow and a swim move that will put him with the elite pass rushers despite the fact he doesn't have elite edge speed. While Ingram could stand to bulk up 20 pounds, the fact that he will only get stronger and his technique will only get better is scary.

The draft is full of decisions. Melvin Ingram vs. Quinton Coples will be a decision that will keep many people up at night. I could compare the two at a glance. Melvin Ingram obviously played with elite competition in the SEC. Quinton Coples was spotty at best during his time at North Carolina. Some experts questioned his motivation. I actually spoke with a North Carolina fan (yeah they actually exist) and he told me that Coples only plays hard when on television and even then he still take plays off. Melvin Ingram has durability issues and that could be a hamper. I can see an injury keeping Coples sidelined for awhile since he gives half effort even while healthy.

There is no argument that athletically Coples has Ingram beat hands down but the intangibles must go to Ingram and that is one of the reasons that Pete Carroll and his college co-eds must draft him here. Then again Pete Carroll sometimes thinks he is the ultimate motivator so it could go either way.
