Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC

The Larry English experiment is over. Caput. Done with. Waste of a pick. His replacement is sitting there at pick 18, in Nick Perry. At 6-3, 250 pounds, Perry fits nicely as a 3-4 OLB. Ran a 4.64, with a 38.5 inch vertical. Very explosive, especially when moving forward. Makes his body small to avoid blockers, and utilizes a wide range of pass rush moves- spins, swims, rips and bull rushes. At his best when he uses his speed to get past the blocker.

He is a bit tight in the hips, and has trouble with his lateral movement. Those troubles will hurt his ability to drop into coverage at the pro level, something he was never asked to do in college. Perry is weak against the run. He manages to keep a low base, but he's just not strong enough to consistently push back the big offensive tackles he'll be taking on in the NFL. If he puts on some bulk, this weakness could easily turn into a strength.

Perry is a hard worker, but there is fear that he will be just a pass rush specialist. The Chargers have a big need for a pass rusher though, and Perry could start immediately with a good offseason.
