With the twenty-second pick of the 2012 CSC Community Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns (chosen by Fan since the Aints) select...
Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
I originally anticipated taking a wide receiver with this pick but the run on receivers made me reconsider. The Browns have many needs and it is more important to go for the best combination of need and value when there are many holes to fill. The Browns need to protect whoever is QB plus establish the running game and Martin will help do that.
At this pick, three offensive lineman stand out as available and able to fill the Browns needs; Mike Adams, Cordy Glenn, and Martin. Adams is local having played for Ohio State and has the physical ability to succeed in the NFL. Unfortunately, Adams has a history of violating rules and was a part of the "Tattoo Scandal." If he puts forth the effort, he could become a starter for someone but he is more of a risk and project than Glenn or Martin. Glenn has been moving up many boards and is projected in some drafts as a higher pick than Martin. Glenn is a well rounded player and can play both guard and tackle. His only drawback is a susceptibility to speed pass rushers which he will see a lot more of in the NFL. I rated Martin as a higher need for the Browns because Glenn is more of a natural guard than a tackle.
Martin spent his college years in a pro style offense protecting Andrew Luck's blind side so he should adapt easily to the NFL. He is very smart. He turned down Harvard to go to Stanford which tells me he should be able to pick up an NFL playbook without too much difficulty. He is strong, athletic and has quick feet making him a natural for both pass and run blocking. For 2011, Martin and David DeCastro protected Luck allowing only nine sacks for the entire season. He was all Pac-10 the past two years and an honorable mention for his freshman year. CBSsports.com listed Martin's intangibles as, "Above-average football smarts and general intelligence. Plays with a nasty streak. Solid character and work ethic." The knock on Martin is that he did not have an ideal combine or pro-day. Regardless, he is still the safest bet for the Browns at this pick to produce on the offensive line.
Tannehill is obviously an option at this pick and is arguably worth the 22nd pick. The problem with the Browns is they have so many needs that drafting a QB would be the equivalent of spitting on a forest fire. The Browns should give McCoy some tools and protection and see what he does. The 2013 draft looks to be a good class for QBs with Matt Barkley (USC), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Tyler Bray (Tennessee), and Tyler Wilson (Arkansas) as probable top picks. The best option for the Browns is to build now and draft a QB next year if McCoy doesn't work out. In the end, value plus need is the right decision for the Browns for the 22nd pick. Martin is the highest combination available.
