2012 NFL Mock Draft: The New England Patriots Select...

With the twenty-seventh pick of the 2012 CSC Community Mock Draft, the New England Patriots (chosen by jeff.l.b) select...

Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

Despite making it to the Super Bowl this past year, there's a lot of directions that the New England Patriots can go in the first round of the 2012 draft to immediately improve their team. Given that they have two picks in the latter part of the draft, it is easiest to explain some of the hows and whys of who I did not select on their behalf. With the re-signing of of centers Dan Connolly and Dan Koppen, the Patriots have already secured on of their bigger needs and took away the desire to draft Wisconsin center Peter Konz. Similarly the run onWRs have force me to look toward the defense where truly their biggest needs exist.

Much like the Saints, the New England Patriots suffer from the dire need of a pass rush. Enter Chandler Jones, a defensive end from Syracuse University to help fill the void. A knee injury took a number of games away from Jones last season, however, some very solid tape still exists. At 6'5 and 3/8" and 265 lbs, Jones gives Belichick something he desires most from those in his front seven...versatility. The Patriots played mostly a standard 4-3 last year, however, it is widely believed that they will return to the 3-4 they have run for so many years under Belichick. Not only will Jones allow King Hoodie to line him up at 4-3 DE, but he also has the combined athleticism to play both a rush linebacker in their 3-4 scheme as well as move inside to play as a 5-tech, which will be his most likely ending spot. If it was not for the knee injury last year, Chandler Jones would be vying to be the first defensive end on the board. Teams are picking up on his tape, however, and many pundits have moved the well thought of prospect up their boards to the middle part of the first round. He possesses both an explosive first punch and constant motor that will help secure the Patriots defensive front for years to come.

A humble son of a preacher man, Chandler Jones' raw athletic talent isn't subject to himself alone. Not only was his brother Arthur selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2010 draft, but his older brother Jon Jones is the current UFC Light Heavy Weight Champion and regarded as one of the top five pound for pound mixed martial artists in the world.

Thanks to all the CSC members who participated in this years community mock draft. Without your help, none of this would be possible.
