David DeCastro, G, Stanford

While most people will say that this is way too early to draft a guard for a team that has so many needs, there's plenty of reasons to do so.

First and foremost, DeCastro would never survive until Kansas City's next pick. He's absolutely a first round prospect. Many scouts have tabbed him as the safest pick in the draft. He would be an immediate starter for Kansas City, and continue to revamp their offensive line, a process they began in free agency when they signed Eric Winston.

Many people would've taken Dontari Poe in this slot, as KC also needs to upgrade the interior of their defensive line, but there are so many mixed reports on Poe they'd be drafting a guy that may end up being a project (or a complete bust) over a guy that's an immediate upgrade and an immediate starter. Kansas City's defense also isn't entirely without talent, despite the fact that the only sacks they could find last season were the ones between their legs. With better coaching, there is a good chance their defense will not continue to so woefully underperform.

Wide receiver appears as a need behind Dwayne Bowe, but there's still the chance Jonathan Baldwin (their first round WR from the last draft) will develop into more of a weapon, and most of the big names at the position were, surprisingly, picked before the Chiefs were on the clock in this draft. This year's receiver class is deep, so that need can be addressed in later rounds.

The most convincing reason for the DeCastro pick is also the most obvious one: Matt Cassel is never going to take this offense on his back and win games on his own. He's going to need help, and that's going to come in the form of the ground game. Jamaal Charles should be returning healthy, and the addition of Peyton Hillis in free agency makes for a pretty powerful one-two punch. Sprinkle in a little Dexter McCluster, and it's pretty obvious what this team's strength is. DeCastro was born to run block, and it's also the reason Kansas City should snatch him up if given the opportunity.
