Jonathan Vilma
Sean Payton: Jonathan Vilma 'one of the all-timers' - ESPN
"The feeling on both of our parts was that what he’s used to and accustomed to playing, at a certain speed and a certain level and certainly what we’ve seen, still wasn’t there. But he’s progressing. ... It was more of just an overall knowing we’ve got eight weeks left in the season, and is he going to be able to progress enough to where he’s comfortable and we’re comfortable enough with his progress? ... But make no mistake about it -- this was something I’m sure was difficult for him to hear. There are some players that you almost have to pull off the field."
Payton: ‘Bring me as many Jon Vilmas as you can’ | wwltv.com New Orleans
Sean Payton didn’t mince his words Thursday when finally explaining his decision to place linebacker Jonathan Vilma on injured reserve, ending the season of the defense’s emotional leader midway through the campaign.
Saluting Jonathan Vilma the man
The news came as no big surprise, but it still wasn't news anyone who knows or covers the New Orleans Saints wanted to hear. Jonathan Vilma was placed on injured reserve by the team. He is gone for the season and, likely, done as a Saint.
New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma placed on injured reserve
"If my knee says no, I told Sean (Payton) that I would be honest and let him know that my knee is saying no more. I am assuming I would be put on IR and we would go from there," Vilma said at the event.

The Saints were 13-0 and simply steamrolling people. The Cowboys had just lost two straight and were fighting for their playoff lives. If you don’t know by now, the fans in New Orleans certainly love their Saints, but they also love beating the Cowboys. For some, it’s pure hatred. For others, they just know how revered the Cowboys are worldwide, and like a lot of other teams, beating America’s Team allows them to stick their chest out a little more.
