As we wait for our New Orleans Saints (10-3) to take on the St. Louis Rams (5-8) later this afternoon, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-9) will host the San Francisco 49ers (9-4). The outcome of that game matters little to Saints fans, unless the Seattle Seahawks (11-2) are starting a three-game losing streak when they take on the New York Giants (5-8).
Assuming the NFC West shapes up as everyone expects, the early afternoon game which is most likely to have any impact on the Saints will be when the Minnesota Vikings (3-9-1) host the Philadelphia Eagles (8-5). The Eagles are currently battling it out with the Cowboys (7-6) to determine which team will win the NFC East to move on to the playoffs (and likely host the Saints next year), and which team won't be playing past December.
Although New Orleans will secure a playoff berth with a victory against the Rams later today... even with a loss, the Saints would be locked into the playoffs if any of the following happen today:
1. Saints tie + Cardinals or 49ers loss or tie
2. Cardinals loss + Cowboys or Eagles loss or tie
3. 49ers loss + Cardinals tie + Eagles loss or tie
4. 49ers loss + Cardinals tie + Cowboys loss or tie
Since the Arizona Cardinals (8-5) will be playing at the same time as the Saints, we should know whether or not the Saints are the second NFC team locked into the playoffs before Sunday Night Football kicks off.
