I try to keep you guys abreast of all the tech improvements and feature upgrades here on Da Chronic as often as possible and the geniuses behind SB Nation's technology are at it again. Yesterday, they released some sweet new upgrades and features to the commenting system.
First of all, there has been a new feature added to commenting that's pretty sweet. It's the Spoiler function and it allows you to hide any or all of your comment, only to be seen by those that choose to see it.
It's super simple to use. Simply highlight whatever text you want to hide, then click the Spoiler function button. Or click the Spoiler button and insert your spoiler text where designated. Whichever order you choose to do it.
Once your comment is published, here is how it will appear:
Only when a reader hovers their cursor over the hidden text will they be able to see it. So if you're writing something that not everyone might want to read, this allows the reader the opportunity to stay uninformed.
The other new thing that this release will bring to everyone is the new touch bar on mobile and tablet devices. This allows for comment navigation on those devices, which is probably in the top 5 of all-time most requested items for SB Nation. In other words, a mobile z button!
The tech guys also went ahead and rolled out some new code behind the scenes. They've done a lot of work to ensure that as little as possible has changed about the commenting functionality so the update should be relatively seamless for you. After this release our commenting will use a more modern and robust javascript language. This will help with performance across browsers and devices, gives them cross-vertical code consistency (the same javascript will be used on SB Nation, The Verge, and Polygon), and allows them to make code changes more easily in the future.
As always, if you see any trouble with the release please email support@sbnation.com. Let us know if you have any questions at all. And be on the lookout for more exciting new functionality in the near future!
