The New Orleans Saints always seem to have a thing for finding players that no other team does. It sometimes leaves you asking these two questions: What's their name again? Wait, where are they from? Today it will be no different.
According to ProFootballTalk.com the Saints will meet with British discus thrower Lawrence Okoye. Being from another country is one thing but the real kicker is that Okoye has never played American football...ever. Then what's all the fuss about?
Well he has expressed that he does want to actually play in the NFL and he recently performed in front of scouts at an NFL Super Regional Combine in Dallas. At 6'6" and 304 lbs. Okoye went through Combine drills and ran a 4.78 40-yard dash, which is blazing for someone his size.
Okoye has played rugby which is the closest he has come to being involved in the sport of football and is projected as a defensive lineman (tackle most likely) or even a possible offensive lineman. He said that five teams have expressed interest in him and has also visited with the San Francisco 49ers.
The bad thing is that the Saints don't have many picks to take such a gamble on a player who is the very definition of boom or bust. Okoye did the workout warrior test but whether or not he can play will be the main question. It would likely take him at least one or two seasons to catch onto the scheme and nuances of the game.
