NFL Mock Draft 2013: Miami Dolphins Select Star Lotulelei

With the twelfth overall pick in the 2013 Canal Street Chronicles community mock draft, the Miami Dolphins (represented by Ralph Malbrough) select...

Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah

Star Lotulelei

#92 / Defensive Tackle / Utah Utes

Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland's future employment depends on the team doing well in 2013. His solution? Buy anything not nailed down.

I love when a team goes bat $#^! crazy in free agency, signing a ton of players. Randy Mueller signing Jeff Blake, Norman Hand, Joe Horn. Fred Thomas, Jake Reed, Chris Oldham, Andrew Glover, Darren Smith, and Darren Perry during 2000 free agency is still probably my favorite Saints off-season ever. If Twitter existed in 2000, Saints fans would have broken it. The Saints were literally signing somebody every day the first week of free agency. It was glorious, except for dial-up internet.

Anyway, back to the Dolphins. They signed Mike Wallace, or as my wife the Dolphins fan calls him, "The dude from the Steelers who catches bombs." Did they overpay? Of course they did but that happens when you are bidding against yourself. The Dolphins also paid Brian Hartline twice the going rate for plucky white receivers. They also gave Dannell Ellerbe $35 million and the dude has never started 16 games in a season. Ireland also gave reasonable one-year deals to Dustin Keller and Brent Grimes. For the record, both of those players should fire their agents for not getting $20 million guaranteed out of Ireland.

I've watched every Dolphins game since I met my wife and they have been stuck in 7-9 purgatory except the one 11-5 season in 2008. Here is my wife's description of the Dolphins:

"They are like that girlfriend you have that tries really hard. She's nice, pleasant, isn't crazy but she has no idea how to dress or put on makeup so instead if being an 8 she's a 5. You keep her around hoping she will eventually be that 8 or 9 but in your heart you know she will always think it's okay to wear sweat pants out on a Saturday night."

The Miami Dolphins: they could be a 10 but wear sweat pants instead.

For the record I'm really excited about the Dolphins for my wife, as her two favorite sports teams are the Dolphins and the Astros. So let's just say she is accustomed to disappointment. My wife holds lawyers in higher esteem than the designated hitter so the move to the American League by the Astros is not going over well in the Malbrough house.

Did I mention the Astros don't have a television deal with 70% of viewers in Houston? So she can't watch her favorite team. Imagine if Tom Benson was fighting with FOX and New Orleans couldn't watch the Saints. BLOOD IN THE STREETS!

As for the Dolphins pick? They desperately need a left tackle and it wouldn't surprise me at all of they panic and trade up to get Lane Johnson. Remember kids, Jeff Ireland is trying to save his job so draft picks in 2014 mean nothing.

Since Johnson isn't available the Dolphins select Star Lotulelei of Utah. He doesn't fill a glaring need but I'm not taking a guard at 12th overall because I'm not Mike Ditka. Lotulelei had some health issues at the combine but I look forward to my wife mispronouncing his name all season.

Thanks to all the CSC members who participated in this year's community mock draft. Without your help, none of this would be possible.
