NFL Mock Draft 2013: Minnesota Vikings Select Jonathan Jenkins

With the twenty-third overall pick in the 2013 Canal Street Chronicles community mock draft, Minnesota Vikings (represented by cajuncommando58) select...

Kevin C. Cox

Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia

Jonathan Jenkins

#6 / Defensive Linesman / Georgia Bulldogs

As with the Titans fans, I spent some time with the Vikings fans over at the Daily Norseman. The Vikings have not made much of a splash in free agency, and they have their own cap concerns. Therefore building through the draft is going to be their best option.

The general consensus of needs were, DT, DE, WR, CB, and G. Most were wanting Chance Warmack, but unfortunately that option is off the board. Also the top 3 CBs are already gone in our mock. Johnathan Banks is still available, but they have concerns with his lack of physicality. They also didn't want anything to do with Kenny Vaccaro, which surprised me. Well that one doesn't matter either, as he is gone also.

With the signing of Greg Jennings in free agency, I don't see WR as high a need for the first round. Quality WRs can be found in the later rounds.

Pass rush was an interest. Where, oh where, have I heard that one before. With most of the best DEs already gone that would fit their 4-3 defense, I decided to look in another direction.

With the decline of the run defense that used to be a hallmark of this team, I decided to go with Johnathan Jenkins, defensive tackle out of Georgia.

Now, I well admit my own prejudices when it comes to Jenkins. With his size and strength (he was a top performer on the bench press at the Combine), I would really like him to anchor the Saints line as a NT, but at the 23rd overall pick he isn't as high a reach. Hint, hint, Payloo; this is a trade possibility.

With the loss of Pat Williams, this is just the player Kevin Williams needs to work alongside. Jenkins is a true run stopper, and will draw plenty of double teams and open up the inside pass rush. Kevin was also drafted in 2003, so now is a good time to be thinking of his eventual replacement. Most would think Jenkins is a more 3-4 NT rather than a 4-3 DT, but with K. Williams to mentor him, I see him as a great fit with this team.
