Saints training camp is finally underway and many key positions in the starting lineup are up for grabs. Battles across both sides of the ball are taking place as the days slowly inch toward final cuts and Canal Street Chronicles is here to take a look at every competition as New Orleans prepares for its season opener against Atlanta September 8th.
Left Tackles
This may be the most important position battle of training camp and one that needs to be secured in style for Saints fans to gain some confidence going into the regular season. Fourth-year man Charles Brown seems to be the frontrunner here and has been taking the first-team snaps with the offense so far.
"(Brown) is working with the (first team) right now, but there’s competition at that position,’’ Payton said Sunday. "I think he’s ready for the transition to step into that spot. It’s not going to be handed to him. He’s going to have to earn it and part of that for him is staying healthy.’’
The position is essentially Brown’s to lose but he will have to stay healthy to keep it with rookie Terron Armstead and former first-round draft pick Jason Smith waiting in the wings. Smith has had a pretty terrible training camp so far and it’s unlikely he’ll actually compete with Brown for the starting role, but Armstead is really catching people’s attention. As a rookie he has a long way to go but Armstead is quickly developing into a viable second option at the position if Brown doesn’t work out.
