Saints Training Camp Battles: Outside Linebacker

As training camp slowly heats up so do the battles for starting positions. Who has a leg up on the competition and who will be riding the pine come September 8th?

Saints training camp is finally underway and many key positions in the starting lineup are up for grabs. Battles across both sides of the ball are taking place as the days slowly inch toward final cuts and Canal Street Chronicles is here to take a look at every competition as New Orleans prepares for its season opener against Atlanta September 8th.

Linebackers

Saints fans had a major scare Monday when Martez Wilson went down with an elbow injury but thankfully he will only be out 2-4 weeks. This is a unit that is already depleted with the loss of Victor Butler for the season and the battle to make the team has intensified as training camp wages on. Wilson and Junior Galette are virtual locks as they compete for a starting spot on the edge but the backups are a totally different story. Chris Chamberlain, Ramon Humber, and Eric Martin are all competing for a spot on the final roster and all have shown flashes of brilliance in camp early on.

Martin has exploded recently and is really showing his athleticism in practice thus far. He has flown all over the field making plays and has gone from a dark horse candidate to a viable option at the position. Humber took the snaps with the first team yesterday and has made some pretty spectacular plays during drills himself, including a really nice strip of newly acquired tight end Ben Watson on Saturday. Humber has opened a lot of eyes in practice and will fight to make the team along with Martin. Chamberlain hasn’t made as much noise as the other two but is still in the running for a roster spot as of today.

Edge: Eric Martin, Ramon Humber
