NFL Roster Cuts 2013: Saints Must Cut Five Players Before Tuesday

The Saints got a head start on their roster cuts last week but still must part ways with a few more players to meet the mandatory roster maximum before the NFL deadline this Tuesday. Here's a look at which Saints players might get a visit from The Turk today or tomorrow.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

NFL teams must cut their rosters down to a maximum of 75 players by 4:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday. For the Saints, who currently have 80 players on their active roster, that means they'll need to get rid of at least 5 players by tomorrow afternoon to comply with NFL rules.

The team got a head start last Monday when they cut seven players and placed A.J. Davis on IR, so they probably don't have as much fat to trim as many other teams in the league. I would expect the Saints to announce some or all of their remaining cuts as early as today. But who they will get rid of remains to be seen.

Injured players Victor Butler and Joe Morgan are still on the active roster, so moving them to injured reserve would automatically free up two of those five roster spots and save the team from actually cutting players. That would leave three more players to cut.

If I had to guess, I would expect some combination of the following four players to be let go over the course of the next two days:

  • Tim Toone (WR)
  • Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (S)
  • Elliot Mealer (G)
  • Isaako Aaitui (DT)

None of these four players made an impact through preseason and have seen limited or no action in three games, so they shouldn't be a surprise.

What do you guys think? Am I on point or are there any players on the current Saints roster more worthy of being cut?
