Saints News, 3/27/14: Starcaps Vendor Pleads Guilty To Misbranding Drug

New, comments

Saints fans will remember that before the Bountyfarce scandal there was the 2008 Starcaps scandal where the NFL tried to suspend several players including the Saints' Deuce McAllister, Will Smith, and Charles Grant for using a weight-loss supplement containing a banned substance. The players pleaded that they didn't know the banned substance was in the supplement because it wasn't listed on the label, so they vigorously appealed Goodell's suspensions. McAllister and Grant were out of the NFL before the proceedings were resolved. Ultimately, only Smith served a suspension, and it was for two games in 2011. Today, the vendor of that drug pleaded guilty to misbranding and is facing either a hefty five to six figure fine or a year in prison.

Vendor of StarCaps, which resulted in suspensions for former Saints, pleads guilty to misbranding drug | Black and Gold
Reuters quoted Haskell’s lawyer, Chris Mancini, as saying the defendant didn’t know StarCaps contained bumetanide, which he said was added by the supplement’s manufacturer in Peru. Both that statement and the fact Haskell admitted her drug was not branded properly are strong indications the players likely didn’t know the banned diuretic was in the StarCaps supplement. The NFL declined to give Reuters comment.

Socialite pleads guilty to misbranding drug tied to NFL suspensions - Yahoo Sports
Nikki Haskell and her company, Balanced Health Products Inc, pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal district court to a misdemeanor count of misbranding in connection with the sale of a pill called StarCaps, whose label did not disclose the presence of a diuretic called bumetanide. Haskell, who billed herself as the "Diet Queen to the Stars," has been an occasional presence in celebrity social circles, with the New York Post's Page Six gossip column reporting her appearance at events involving Aretha Franklin and Ivanka Trump. She was the chief executive of Balanced Health, which marketed StarCaps as an "all natural diet supplement" containing papaya and garlic. But in 2008, Balanced Health launched a recall of StarCaps citing the presence of bumetanide, a drug used to treat heart failure, renal failure and high blood pressure that carries health risks including fluid and electrolyte loss.
