We continue with the next matchup in our "Most Hated Person in Saints History" tournament.
For those who haven't been following along,we've got a full 64-person bracket packed with all the ghosts from Saints past that you love to hate. We're going matchup by matchup, choosing the more hated Saints figure each time, until we've finally crowned a winner as the most hated person in Saints history.
The full tournament can be found directly below. Our next matchup today is between the No. 20 John Mecom vs. No. 45 ranked Doug Nussmeier.
Your decision can be based on anything you'd like, whether it's on the field performance, off the field antics, or anything in between. I highly encourage those veteran fans to share there memories of some of the older persons in question and make their arguments for or against. Younger members may want to wait and read what the veterans have to say before placing their vote.
To help you make your decision here's a little more info on today's contestants, courtesy of BewareofDog:
John Mecom (Owner 1967-1984) - During the 18 seasons that John Mecom owned the Saints they were the worst team in the league with a winning percentage of .311 which was dead last in the NFL during that period. It wasn't the fact that Mecom was a hands off owner that was the problem. Tom Benson is also a hands off owner and the Saints are a winning franchise during the 29 seasons he's owned the team. Mecom could never find the right football people to put in charge and run the team. It was just one horrific mistake after another. And even when it seemed like maybe the Saints had found the right guys to run the team, you somehow got the sense that the inmates were running the asylum as a culture of losing which was reinforced by rampant drug use by players began to dominate the locker room. This atmosphere was allowed to fester and grow because there was no real leadership or stabilizing influence in the front office. The best thing that can be said about John Mecom is that he sold the team to a local owner instead of relocating the franchise or selling to out-of-state buyers who would have moved team anyway.
Doug Nussmeier (QB 1996-1997) - Okay, um.....who the hell is Doug Nussmeier? Was he elected Governor of Louisiana after Buddy Roemer? Nussmeier was a 4th round pick by the Saints in 1994 whose entire NFL career consisted of 2 starts (both losses against the Falcons) and only attempted a pass in 3 other games. Okay, so why do we hate this fella? Oh, now I remember. He's the guy who started that stupid dance - "teach me how to Dougie, teach me how to Dougie, teach me how to Dougie". No? That wasn't him? Oh, well. Maybe one of y'all can think of a reason to hate this cat.
Voting will be open for exactly 48 hours from the time of publish. Voting results and brackets will be updated as we go along.
